I believe it is very good that Microsoft is still being very involved with the younger generation. I am 76 and the next number coming soon and really enjoying working with Windows 10, and just added a new SSD after having problems add it because of an old bad Harddrive. all be safe... best to all. I'm so dumb to have reserved Windows 10. Now I'm having problems with doing all that I need to do to keep it from installing and going crazy.

    This is utterly ridiculous

A friend has just purchased this month a toshiba satelite i5 running 8.1 "with free upgrade to windows 10" - good
It was obviously set up by Toshiba with auto upgrades. It has downloaded and attempted to instal 10 but fails on second boot with message failed to install and rolls back automatically to 8.1. -OK
As far as I can tell from telephone conversations the install windows 10 option is still in update options and the result is at what appears to be 3 day intervals it tries and fails again. UTTERLY RIDICULOUS.
Having searched multiple forums it appears there is a driver problem and suggestions such as update the nvidia driver/uninstall the device which it has. upgrade the bios. disable the wireless card. disable Mcafee and on and on. There is no definitive statement from MS or TOSHIBA to sort this out.
How does a person who's total knowledge of an OS is to click on links to amazon, facebook, email and expect it to work sort this out. There will be a lot of unhappy people out there.
As I cannot actually do this for her ( distant friend) she is thinking of returning it for a refund as not fit for purpose.

This may work better and easier, Get Windows 10 Icon - Remove from Taskbar in Windows 7 and 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums See option 3 #3 or Option 4.

I did what the link said. I went to windows update and deleted the update KB3035583 and the icon on the task bar disappeared. If I go to Microsoft it nags me to update, I no longer go there. I even blocked their cookies but doesn't stop them. At one time that worked but not anymore. I still find cookies in CCleaner.

Emma, Microsoft always uses cookies. They do not necessarily have anything to do with Windows 10, but it is possible. But MSFT have used cookies since before Windows 10 was ever dreamed of.

Essenbe, I did not previously care if MS left cookies on my computer, but I do now. I don't like what they are doing and I guess my action is just a silly way to keep them off of my computer. I did this a few months back not knowing they were MS cookies and it worked. I went to MS and it told me I had blocked necessary cookies to get in. I unblocked the two cookies I had last blocked and got in. They are being left without me even visiting their site.

I have completely block Google and maybe I will find a way to block MS eventually.

I found out why I could not block MS cookies. I blocked them in FF, but I also needed to block them in IE also.

Thank you Juliet. Windows 7 is my favorite OS, but it was a bit more frustrating to learn than the previous ones.
I never gave 7 for no one here! When first planning out the present build I knew there would come a time when I would be running a second OS along with 7 and so far that has proven to be 10 while I didn't allow 10 to upgrade over the 7 install but nice to have two OS drives and simply slapped a fast 7 install on the second with SP1 long enough for 10 to upgrade over that.

I will have to get to seeing a clean install of 7 again soon anyways since the last clean install was in June 2013. I had restored a system image I made six months prior but was still seeing issues with Windows Explorer not responding as well as the need to simply start fresh again. With the 10 app KB3035583 update removed there hopefully you allowed the check for updates to proceed once that was taken care of in order to "Hide" it from view with a right click! That will prevent it from being downloaded and installed again.

Until MS "adjusts" it, just like some of the other "W7 to W10" updates.
