Microsoft pushes Windows 10 upgrade to PCs without user consent

Don't be surprised if it gets unhidden again some time latter on. I've lost track of how many times I'd hidden the Bing update in Windows 7 only to have it show up again when I ran Windows update manually.

Night Hawk, I know about the setting you mentioned, but they can over ride that if they want. They did that to me when I reformatted and set it to Never which was fine in that situation. The over ride was necessary to install what I needed, but it shows they can if they want to.

When I last reformatted my laptop I chose the customize option when setting it up as recommended in here. I was amazed to see "do you want to activate windows update?". I have never seen that before but I usually used the express settings. Like a dummy I said yes, later I realized I should have said no. Hopefully they can't override my settings using services to disable the updates.

I'll be waiting to see since that was the only update I ever hid! Generally up until now all the update have either gone right on smoothly or had to be tried again if they were stubborn. But 10 can't simply upgrade over the 7 install here anyways on the main build. It already tried and failed miserably!



In fact now every time I go in to manually check for anything new that same screen appears first! The main reason for that was simply haiving a few extra drives installed for storage and backup purposes. Unlike previous versions that put one version on with the other version's drive unplugged when extra drives were present the 10 installer gets confused? and places the boot files on one drive and the BT and WS folders on another.

That was the case before trying to upgrade over the 7 install when the long wait was over for seeing 10 in the updates. Those two folders are now on the 7 drive until removed. In case anyone says the installation files and install.wim are in the "$Windows~BT" folder not on the 64bit. That's where the WS folder keeps those.



As you can see I briefly started the setup.exe file found in the "C:\$Windows~WS\Sources\Windows" sub folder there. If you spot those two you know enough to run the Disk Cleanup tool fast. One thing to know however is that the 10 app itself is intended for the free upgrade to 10 and will be useless after next June! That's when they will be charging for upgrades unless extending the initial upgrade offer?

The methods outlined in the guides will solve the problem for the time being at least unless MS should happen to come up with another type of update as rudolfo2 suggests could happen.

I think this will become one of the main obstacles MS will end up having to review since it could turn the tides in opposition to how they are trying to change how each newer version arrives. "You must upgrade or else!" type thinking apparently came as a result of 7 being a huge success! and still businesses where glued to old XP Networking concepts.

Now since 8 didn't go over too well from seeing the Start menu as well as support in other things stripped away from the OS like no more dvd playback or video codecs for WMP as well as some other drastic moves in to sway towards the mobile platform this 1 Billion PC agenda could easily back fire!

The use of Cortana search to replace the old Start>Search option and Bing for the web can taken or left behind depending oh the view. Now you have Bing news photos on the Search when looking something up like your system configuration. Simply type in "msconfig" and click on the web option to be presented with the Bing search engine results.

And actually to no surprise to pick out a new tv set to replace the old 20" diagonal large picture tube for an led model why do I need "smart tv"? Actually I'll the tv/dvd combo please since Windows can no longer play... Still no Blu Ray in those yet however.

Don't be so sure. My wifes 7 premium 64 machine was set for auto updates and Get Win10 said it was compatible. It later said that the Nvidia video was incompatible. In between these two pronouncements, on Jul 29/30 Win 10 downloaded and tried to install itself 3 times......~ 6.5 GB total and failed every time. IT DID NOT ASK FOR PERMISSION TO INSTALL. I only found out when I got a notification about my bandwidth useage and checked the update history. I turned off the auto update and eventually upgraded it manually with an 8.1 driver. Thankfully 2 of our machines were offline that week and I jumped the que on my 7 pro and upgraded it manually on the 30 th. If I had not turned off auto update I am fairly sure it would still be burning bandwidth since I had to cancel the fourth download manually. Back in the 80's we would have just blamed this sort of quirk on a passing Wizard ))

Numerous people got the failed to install listing in their update history. Multiple listings in fact. If you never actually gave it the OK to install, a file or files were not downloaded to prevent it from installing. Granted, it shouldn't have even tried to install, Microsoft goofed there. Anyway, the point is, even though it tried to install, it couldn't, not until you actually tell the GWX App to do it. I'm not defending Microsoft, not in this case, they could have done it a lot better. I'm just pointing out that it wouldn't have upgraded your machine without you giving it the final OK. As far as I know anyway.

That's one thing I was pointing out on the guide as well as the thread about how the unwanted unintended upgrade could still run into a problem like simply having an extra drive installed to store things on! That will goof the MS secret designs a bit there fast enough actually tossing a monkey wrench into the works!

The other option of course is to see the 10 app totally removed and hidden from the regular updates as well as not leaving the older version set for automatic updates. Once no longer automatic you are taking charge over what goes on then! That's playing things smart while many simply allow just anything to go on and wonder why something happens?!

I keep my User folders on a separate drive on my laptop and desktop. Documents, Pictures, Music, etc. I had no problems upgrading from 8.1 to 10. I didn't have to change the location again after either. YMMV I guess. Out of 4 PC's I did the Upgrade This PC Now option on, I had one that reported setup failed. I just ran it a second time and it completed. Even though it failed that one time, nothing was lost or messed up in the process. All rather painless for me.
