As far as I know, once the bits are downloaded, it will NOT install without your say-so. What you'll see is a notice in Windows Update that it's all ready to install - you need to click a nice obvious 'Get Started' button to actually do it.

Re: Does W10 auto download and auto install? ....... My understanding is that if you received the W10 upgrade files on your hard drive and you were not aware of it, it will not automatically try to install - unless/until you do a restart. That starts the install. If it fails to install it will continuously try over and over again and then it becomes a royal pain to get rid of. At this point if you try to uninstall the hidden files (the W10 upgrade) and you still have WU set to automatically download, it will resend the entire upgrade to you again. On the other hand if it does not fail, the install will continue until you are presented with the EULA - the install stops here waiting for your response. Obviously W10 is not completely installed, but as the process has started, you need to proceed cautiously in getting rid of the W10 files. NB: They are protected files.

That interesting but still when is the Windows 10 EULA displayed? All version of windows 10 whether it was the rtm or insider build always had a EULA displayed at least it did for me. I even had one eula pop up-when I did an upgrade between insider builds. When the EULA is displayed you can hit don't agree or cancel then it shouldn't install windows 10 at all or revert back to you previous build or operating system.

Pushing an OS upgrade download even if updates are set to automatic is wrong IMO.

@groze Yes you are correct - as long as you say you don't agree to the EULA, the upgrade ends and returns you to your installed OS. You will get constant nags to install though. You have to get rid of the upgrade files to stop the nags because you can not hide the update in WU.

I think the most important thing is: who is going to pay for people that have very low download caps and now have gone over? I used to be one and I am certain some of them don't even realize it.... yet...
Also filling up roughly 3GB on someone's hard disk without consent... NAY NAY!!!

Yep, I don't want any large download happening without me having to click on something. Forget about the actual install, no download to begin with. Gets back to having full control over upgrade/update downloading which they have taken away.

I would really like to know why MS is doing this and what they are getting out of it. Why do they care if we use our old systems. Eventually we will have to buy a new computer.

I heard various things in the channels, the one thing that came back is that IF people would choose to upgrade that the upgrade would be really quick since the software was already on the hard drive. This reason is still bogus: I purchased the hardware, I decide what is going on the hardware. The bad thing is that this plays straight into the hands of other popular operating system.

How would that be possible to have windows 10 already installed if you didn't agree to the EULA before installing?
Beats me! I wasn't the one claiming to find already downloaded and especially already installed since it still takes user interaction and why the article's mention of hearing complaints by people doesn't even add up! Even with everything set for automatic you can avoid the actual upgrade unless totally naive and looking at it as you would any other update?!

That's a good question. Waiting anxiously for the answer.
I think you would need to find the few who posted about that in order to ask them direct how they managed to see that happen! IF and I mean "IF" they didn't do it they must be sharing the machine with someone else like in a college dorm who did! if not by another family member like a sibling getting on and playing around with things and just happened to see the notification? "Gee I wonder what this will be like?" whamo 10 goes on!

Well let's see after reserving 10 in.. when? Back in June I thought when the 10 app first appeared here I waited until the first of this month to finally see this!

Microsoft pushes Windows 10 upgrade to PCs without user consent-w10-download-alert.jpg

And as I knew it would when clicking on that to see 10 then start downloading and go to upgrade the 7 install here it failed big time with an all too familar error screen from having those two storage drives plugged! "awww... sorry MS but me outsmart you learning from the first downloads not going on!" And subsequently the KB3035583 update for the 10app and new registry key and Dword32 value "DisableOSUpgrade" set to 1 will prevent any concern for 7 on two systems running 10/7 dual boots no less!
