You should be good to go then! Those I actually backed up from the drive 10 following the eventual clean install there while they were seen on the 7 drive when the clone and fresh 7 install both failed to upgrade during the first day. That first upgrade over the previous 7 host was to fail as well until the extra storage drives were found to be the problem but still seeing the same two temp folders behind.

On the upgrade the 10 VM just saw here no BT or WS folders appeared when the 10565 or rather 10-565 the way that should be looked at being W10 Build 565 upgraded over the 10240 seeing the Install button in the Advanced options when checking up on things once the "Get Insider builds" option was set to go! With the Fast not Slow option set the day wait went fast for seeing the WI build ready to install.

That was a planned upgrade that took place there however in order to examine the progress with things like Edge made since the 10240 was seen available back on July 29th. The VM will upgrade itself with the next build to follow hopefully before the present build on the VM expires without ever seeing activation status. As you can see you don't get any temp keys to use when using this type of option.

You can see the watermark if you look closely down at the lower right hand corner indicating it being an Insider build for evaluation, testing purposes only. But the VM option works out for a look at the latest as well as any other OS without interfering with the present version of Windows you have on. VMs are relatively easy to set up and replace as you go along without any worry about unintended upgrades or viruses even since they can also act like a filtering process when going to try out some new download on the VM which can be nuked completely at a moment's notice if any bugs should be discovered as well as being able to run multiple OSs of choice on a single host OS. A good way to look at Windows 10 as well as any other OS! VMware Player - Install Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Wendy, did you block the updates in local services or just set the updates to Never? MS can over ride the Never settings.

If 10 downloads like it already has on a VM when opting for the Insider builds there you will see the install option which is where many not so pc literate people ended up installing 10 without paying full attention assuming it was simply another update going on. But for anyone with even basic installation experience "you would know" immediately if it was the 10 upgrade option!

Now that's the whole part of this that never made any real sense as to how 10 was being labeled as simply going on entirely by itself? No! It was the automatic download but not automatic installation that people have been reporting on. On the VM I was able to put that to the test even more so while you wouldn't expect any Insider build to be found in the Optional updates but still saw the option to back out if you had a last minute panic!

With the 10 app still on this is what I saw when the second mini tower I connect to remotely saw when checking up on whether or not 10 would impose itself automatically or not without disabling anything. That wasn't with the updates set to never either but simply the notification 10 was available to download. It wasn't automatically downloaded first since I was set for the "Let me decide when to download and install updates" option seen in 7 which would also prevent any automatic download you would see when having it set to the "Automatic(recommended"" setting.

You won't need to worry much any longer since MS was called out on the find that the Windows 10 Upgrade option which was being found checked off will no longer come in checked off! MS got petitioned about that where someone came out with "we made a mistake we will be correcting" cough gag har har as that one likely snickered later about! The latest check allowing "Everything" both Important and Optional in 7 here revealed no 10 bugs to be concerned over!

And if you are still going to worry any simply plug in an extra internal hard drive and this is what you will run smack into with any 10 upgrade attempt!

"GUARANTED 100% FAIL PROOF" Sabotage for 10 upgrade installs! You'll find the boot files and temp install folders ending up on the wrong drive! No worry about 10 upgrading over the present Windows install you have! In fact just to see the latest Insider build go on over the 10 VM I set up for that purpose I had to click the "Fix Me" button despite being signed into the MS account with the Automatic and Fast settings set to go!

Has anyone else heard of forced upgrades since MS put out their Oops announcement. I wonder if it is safe now to enable Windows Updates.

I've watched on 3 different W8.1 systems, and the auto-selected-optional-update has disappeared.

Thank you Groze, have read that. I read all I can find on the subject.

I had a very lively discussion with a computer repair man I know, he still has faith in MS. He said MS cannot spy on the public and we can control updates on W 10. He also said you can't believe all you read on the net which is true, but he was referring to the resources you all post in here. I suggested he use that W 10 set up he has for his regular computer and he might learn something.

Well I have here on three machines so far and haven't had any problem with 10 other then the upgrade install issues where you can easily bypass any buggy upgrade by seeing a clean install. You'll notice they made an immediate apology for the "Oops Moment" they were called out on to save their public face while you can suspect someone at MS put something unwanted under the hood when first seeing Optional updates anything coming in checked off.

    Controlling the Windows 10 Upgrade

We understand you care deeply about what happens with your device. This is why – regardless of your upgrade path – you can choose to upgrade or decline the offer.

That being said, we would encourage everyone to upgrade because Windows 10 is the best Windows ever – familiar, safer, faster, and full of innovations. After any upgrade, you can easily go back to your prior version of Windows within 31 days if you choose. We do this by keeping a full copy of your previous operating system on your device – including apps and settings – for the first 31 days following your upgrade. At any time during the first 31 days, you can go to “Settings->Update and Security->Recovery and Uninstall Windows 10” to return to your prior version of Windows.
And so says the Making it Easier to Upgrade to Windows 10 apology blog for their "accident"? You could still suspect someone in marketing seeing a little sabotage in order to push 10 while from a corporate stand point you will never see any ommision of guilt for anything like that to begin with.
