I wanted to add this. The action center came on with 1 message for me. I checked and it was about windows updates and I had messages about updates turned off and it is disabled. When I looked into the details it was a full page of updates, some showing installed and lots of driver updates. I was wondering if this is an attempt to set up my computer for W 10 in spite of my settings.

I do have installed updates but only the ones I needed to install MS Office and WLM and I have never seen any driver updates. I do pay attention to updates.

    Night Hawk,

Flash has a 64 bit download now? I know Google chrome included a 64 bit flash internally.

Time for Firefox to get a 64 bit release version.

Next Adobe needs to work on a 64 bit for shockwave.

I think Win 7 SP1 had a total of 230 or so , i update all of them at once , don't have the patience to only do a few at a time . They all eventually install just fine and i can get some sleep while it's going on.

    Wish i had a Win 7 installation disk , i just have ISO's.
You can extract the contents from any ISO disk image as you would copy the content from a dvd and then simply see a new ISO image created following the steps in the guide on how to do that. Here I found that SP1 would slipstream the best over trying it with any large number of updates packed in along with the service pack. The only problem I have had with IE has been....it would not accept Duckduckgo as a home page. Someone in here recommended DDG and it seems to be as good as google. I checked IE yesterday and it did have the DDG as my home page. You never can be sure regarding computers. Lots of surprises, good and bad.
I've simply went "BING" and called it a day back when that first came out to avoid all of the "Google bots" and "Google-itis"!
Yahoo and Ask.com are always a bit limited while Bing made a good entry. I have to wonder if you can still see Bing on your desktop as it had been for 7?

We just missed each other so I edited this one. I just the 64bit Adobe as well as flash player go onto the laptop I upgraded to 10 over the weekend. I ran into a few pages that wouldn't play embedded videos on the 64bit Waterfox I have on the laptop which just happens to be the 64bit Firefox only not from Mozilla. About every few months the next version of that will prompt to go on since that sees active support.

It was back about 3-4yrs. you would have had to struggle to get anything to run on a 64bit browser since it's been a long wait for the Flash Player to arrive! As for Waterfox I still end up back at Mozilla or some other tut for FF when needing to find out how to do something with the 64bit variant however. The developer who came up with doesn't spend much time adding resources to the home site.

Driver updates will be found in the Optional not Important list as a rule along with the 34 language packs options. That could be for sound, video, other addon type hardwares like a separate nic card installed often seen as Realtek/Gigabyte Family controllers if not anything new for the main board if that happens to be a recent model.

I never problems with the general updates when going to check or otherwise find them going now with 10 more so automatically due to when having another need to restart the main build here. You will see Windows Defender updates quite otten regardless of what you have on for system protection as well as for the Windows Malware Removal tool which I've never seen actually do anything but collect dust! But those along with the usual security updates usually the bug fixes every version ends up seeing the general lists overall are never anything to worry about.

Now if you know that a certain update meaning regular update will cause a problem you would simply right click on that to select the hide option so it will no longer be listed in the two lists of available being the Important and Optional. Where 10 comes in besides the 10 app would be a web type installer that once on then proceeds to download the necessary set up files once the upgradee is initiated usually by the user who then wonders why the user account creation comes after naming the pc but did something like click on the wrong thing that then gets the upgrade process rolling.

I know all of that, I was just wondering if those updates were in preparation for MS to upgrade my computer. It is old so it would probably need everything in the list. The message was to turn on my updates, I am assuming so they could install those updates. I enabled updates, but left the setting on never just to have a look at the updates, no new ones, only 11/14 updates. I disabled it again.

MS isn't going to be sending out a mountain of updates to prep anything for 10. The download itself has it's own executable typically being the setup.exe file packed away while the Windows update installer gets things under way. But not including the automatic download the upgrade itself would still need user interaction to first trigger the upgrade and to see the usual location and pc name type information entered and finally followed by the user account info for the admin account itself.

For the second mini tower here I have the 7 Pro install set for auto after hiding the 10 app KB3035583 update and nothing was seen other then when having clicked on the 10 app early last month to see the reserved copy was finally ready to be download only a month or so late! When clicking the go ahead the upgrade immediately failed as I knew it would from already having added in a second hard drive!

As I mentioned earlier on the thread here by having a storage drive plugged in that will throw a monkey wrench into the works where the upgrade authorized by you or unintended while still needing someone at the machine to click on things will fail every time. The 10 app would have indicated if the machine you have is incompatible the first time you clicked on that. I was just answering someone else's problem who was trying to get 10 to go on an older system with only 2gb thinking 10 would run on anything under 4gb apparently when the minimum is 1gb! But as explained you could only run so much when being at the bare minimum.

The board and other hardwares lacked anything newer then 7 explaining why 10 found it incompatible during the intentional upgrade leaving out any worry about MS prepping some old clunker case you have laying around. The 10 installer will first to see if there any 8, 8.1 type driver sets available when detecting the hardwares you have. The installer will then download and install those updated driver sets during the upgrade or when planning a clean install.

That is what I thought it was trying to do, installing what I needed, but it couldn't install them.

I did not need anything for my 8.1, I had it set to install automatically in preparation for W 10,. but my W 7 is much older and the only updates it had installed were for my MS Office and WLM.

I think you mean Live Essentials that came out for 8 back in 2012 since MS had dropped the original Windows Live Mail. I used the WLCustom installer not the default web installer until they did away with Messenger in favor of Skype. 10 has the Get Skype option found in the Start menu.

With the upgrades that come out buggy those are mostly the 7 to 10 upgrade installs since 10 is the third version newer to 7 which forms kind of a compatibility gap of it's own at times. When first wondering why I didn't have to grab updated board drives for the onboard controllers I looked the two models one being a micro atx board in the second mini tower there both Gigabyte where the support pages showed 8, 8.1 support and the 10 installer simply ran with those.
