So unticked IE11 and since then my laptop has run faster, Edge goes to the sites and forums better and no freezes or crashes

Well whatever browser you are using now has broken the punctuation in your replies. Your posts are very hard to read.

I think you missed all my posts in the "Windows Update" forum , that was why i couldn't get 7 back . I now have 7 back and couldn't be happier but MS has made it very very difficult to install Win 7 clean because to get the first round of Win 7 updates it takes nearly an entire day .

NOEL on 7 forums said many people are waiting 20+ hours for Win 7 to download the first round of updates , apparently MS is making it as difficult as possible for users to install Win 7 fresh . And no , i don't use system images.

Fredc, I used to do 5 or 6 net frames at one time and reg updates 10 or 15 at a time. The last time I did that as soon as I rebooted with the first batch MS installed all the rest. I had 155 to do on my laptop after going back to W 8. I only did them because I wanted W 8.1. No updates since.

When I did it I used a Slip streamed Windows 7 Pro DVD with SP1 already on it. Makes for a faster install. Yes I must have missed that as I don't read every Thread or may have over looked it. If things do not improve soon, I may be doing that.

I want to set something straight here. I said I bought a new W 8 PC and it turned out to be a W 8.1. The box said one thing the system specs said another. When I called to order the reformatting cd's they also said it was a W 8.1. With Classic Shell I like it almost as much as W 7.

I liked Classic Shell on Win8 then on Win8.1. It has been updated for Win10 but so far I'm staying with Win10's Start, works good albeit somewhat different from Win7 and I have to keep in mind the right-click of the Start button has more of what I normally use than Win7's did.

Have everything set up how I like it
I never cared for Chrome with only a fast look at that one as well as trying out a rather lengthy list of browsers over time. I preferred Opera over Firefox and then one day came across Waterfox someone had developed to be the 64bit variant of FF when looking for another browser besides IE 9 at the time. IE would freeze up too quickly when having multiple browser windows open.

Waterfox on the other hand while being a 64bit browser that had to wait for the 64bit Flash Player to finally arrive has been reliable and the way Edge presently is an unfinished browser when placed next to others MS rushed it as a replacement for IE in 10?! Another bone head move by someone to throw anything when not actually ready enough out there too quickly. IE 11 is present but no shortcuts are included in 10 where you can easily miss it entirely if not looking for it!

Edge and Cortana are the more or less embedded items and those can likely be removed as well but only with some advanced experience at tracking things down in the system registry. IE on the other has never been any problem as far as seeing it removed since you could simply go back and download it all over again if needed as long as you downloaded the substitute browser first.

I think Win 7 SP1 had a total of 230 or so , i update all of them at once , don't have the patience to only do a few at a time . They all eventually install just fine and i can get some sleep while it's going on.

The only problem I have had with IE has been....it would not accept Duckduckgo as a home page. Someone in here recommended DDG and it seems to be as good as google. I checked IE yesterday and it did have the DDG as my home page. You never can be sure regarding computers. Lots of surprises, good and bad.
