    W 7 desktop Home Premium 64 - OS

I don't do updates anymore. I bought a new W 8 desktop PC today because my W 7 is over 4 years old and by the time it dies I would probably have to get a W 10. I will set it up without cable plugged in so no updating while I am setting it up. Then I will set updates to never, install MS office and windows live mail, then disable windows update. I will also order the reformatting DVDs or stick like I always do. I just have to figure out where to put the PC.

    Now I've seen it all.
My father is in a seniors home and has been since January. We bought him a new
Dell laptop with Windows 7 SP1 on it.
Sometime in July I noticed the "Get Windows 10" icon in his System Tray. He didn't notice it because he is not all that computer savvy.
He would not click on it by himself..guaranteed 100%.
So I just checked his laptop and his Windows~BT folder has 6.5 GB in it.
Not only that but his computer has been trying (and failing) twice a day for over a month now to upgrade to Windows 10.
I uninstalled KB3035583 and hid it and changed his WU options to "download but ask me".
The residence he is in probably has over 50 clients with computers, many with Windows 7 and very slow (1 Mb/s) wifi.
So without any of them knowing it, Microsoft has been secretly sending them the Windows 10 upgrade files.
That's a lot of data for the residence's server to handle and is probably costing them more money depending on the contract they have.

This has got to stop. Where does Microsoft get off initiating a download to millions of unsuspecting users many of whom have monthly data caps?

I'm just waiting for the crap to hit the fan over this one.

I never gave 7 for no one here! When first planning out the present build I knew there would come a time when I would be running a second OS along with 7 and so far that has proven to be 10 while I didn't allow 10 to upgrade over the 7 install but nice to have two OS drives and simply slapped a fast 7 install on the second with SP1 long enough for 10 to upgrade over that.

I will have to get to seeing a clean install of 7 again soon anyways since the last clean install was in June 2013. I had restored a system image I made six months prior but was still seeing issues with Windows Explorer not responding as well as the need to simply start fresh again. With the 10 app KB3035583 update removed there hopefully you allowed the check for updates to proceed once that was taken care of in order to "Hide" it from view with a right click! That will prevent it from being downloaded and installed again.

So if I am understanding this correctly, you have a dual boot system, 7 as your main with 10 as a secondary. If so, how is that working out for you?

The last time i had a dual boot with Windows 7 and Windows 10, Windows 10 totally screwed up my entire hard drive. Ended up having to reformat and reinstall 7. Ever since, I have been running 10 in VM, to scared to try a dual boot again. Windows 10 is the only one I have ever had a dual boot problem with.

    Sorry to interject.
I triple-boot (XP, Win7, Win10 - upgraded from 7) and I have not had any problems, other than Win7 constantly trying to upgrade that drive to 10 (problem solved with the standard posted solutions). I keep each OS on a separate hard drive.

You ought to try triple booting. Grub2 for the moment actually prevents you from installing windows 10 or upgrading to a new insider build but there is a workaround. Also, if Grub2 in installed windows 10 will process the upgrade or new build like normal tell the final step, then it will roll back to the previous build or operating system.

Good Grief! You went for a new what? 8 PC! No way Hose' here! Sorry I passed up on 8 and didn't any time to experiment with 8.1 before 10 TP arrived and with one look I said to myself "MS is now back in the ball park again!". 10 is a more like an upgrade from 7 should look like not the experimental tests for dual platform GUI 8 and 8.1 see with Metro in your face! rejected by many on first sight as a mobile OS.

I've never had to review a clean install guide now for a good number of year always figuring how to get each new version to go on while still needing to review how partitioning changed from Dos format options like FDisk to DiskPart and even the Gnoe Partition editor or GParted from the other OS. But trying to get 10 to go on the first time was a mystery while having the 7 drive unplugged and at first seeing that cloned to the second spare OS drive now the 10 Host/boot drive.

Once I went through the clean install guide I keep a ilnk for in my sig along with several others people will need and should look over 10 went right on with the initial upgrade buggy! Not planning a clean install but wanting to keep things intact for the initial examination I ended up with a second upgrade to repair the first but wouldn't activate. MS servers bogged down that first week. I could then replug the previous 7 host drive back once I got the latest version of EasyBCD on as well as well a few other newer versions for programs like the antivirus. The 2014 version of would not install and ended up with the 2016 beta there.

With the 7 drive plugged back in once a new boot entry for 7 was added in 10 not being able to add one for 10 into the 7 BCD store note but as expected since 10 is three versions newer I did not run into the same type of issues seen when trying it with the 8 Customer Preview where both 7 and 8 CP ended up needing to be isolated from each other despite the dual boot across separate drives. A volume of disk errors ended up shutting both versions down entirely until running the DiskCheck for 7 on the 7 drive and only then seeing 7 startup without freezing! For 8 I hit the PC Refresh option and that added in 7 in there to end up seeing both crash again.

Not one problem seen so far with 10 as the host/boot OS now almost two full months later without any need for Grub or Grub2 anything but simply working with the Windows BCD for 10 but unfornately not so with 7. While 7 could still use a nice clean install after the last two years to tidy things up a bit it hasn't been running into any issues with a newer version on. They both have been playing well together as they should.

When you say your entire hard drive that suggests you split the singe drive up not planning a separate stand alone type install on a separate drive and then adding 7 as a boot option correct? 10 should immediately become the default OS if the install or upgrade went well with the option in the msconfig boot tab to change that back to 7. The second case here is seeing 7 running as the default OS without any issues there either. In fact between the two desktops and a laptop all seeing upgrade installs to 10 that was the one time I could have left the upgrade on! 1 out of 3 not "bug eeeee"! "Not a bad ration MS! care to try again?" The laptop's upgrade that came after was a mess until replaced by a few clean installs to switch over from the 32bit pre-installed OEM copy of 7 HP to the 64bit flavor of 10 Home there. That was a gift for someone who never actually got much time to get used to things like the social networks even to hear from old friends as well as family members before taking seriously ill.

At the care facility the WiFi was connected to at first until needing to get all the updates on as far as maintainence and later could no longer connect to the web at the place. With a clean install of 10 still connect to the private network but still no web access I have to look into with the new management apparently. Otherwise each 10 install has worked out great! And if 7 wasn't around it would either be going backward to Vista or forward which MS finally got around to with 10! I just do not favor the methodology they are trying out now however and have previously mentioned it could very well back fire in their faces!

Shame you and others didn't have time to actually use 8 series instead of a knee jerk reaction on first looks

There is more Metro in your face in Windows 10 than there ever was in 8, at least in 8 you could mostly avoid the Metro side of things

And what would that be? A new area for resizeable tiles pertruding off of one side of the Start menu perhaps? We knew MS was working on a dual platform to begin with but at least 10 offers a Desktop option while you didn't find that in 8 or 8.1!

Microsoft pushes Windows 10 upgrade to PCs without user consent-w10-star-menu-resize-4-organized.jpg

You couldn't see that with 8 or 8.1! You had to download some 3rd party option instead!

From what I understand 8.1 was a bit better then 8 there while still lacking for the desktop platform still being a bit too Metro. Also I have the 8.1 Enterprise edition presently on VM here for a lookover at 8.1 and haven't been much impressed so far. And I knew it would take a few versions for MS to finally work things out if they were going to be able to keep the desktop OS portion alive and well. And as for not having the time that wasn't by intent but simply having other matters to tend to that came up. With 8 I had already seen enough the first time around and wasn't impressed!

There was a desktop option in 8.1 (start menu was only metro thing you saw unless using a 3rd party tool)

I used 8.1 every day on the desktop and only saw Metro items when I chose to do so, it worked exactly as previous versions using the desktop

With 10 I am now forced into the Modern style, no option

I do like 8 series and 10, but saying 8 had more Metro is just wrong, 10 forces more of the Modern style onto people than 8 ever did

You will never see the "Classic Start menu" brought back without some 3rd party app with Vista being the last to see that option. Vista had brought the Aero themes in with it there. As for the tile area at first it was a concern until getting 10 and working things out to make more of a Quick Launch jump list of icons to serve a purpose compared to 8's in you face Large tiles all over while the option for full screen is there not for strictly desktop but for the dual touchscreen Tablet mode when you remember from 8 on is dual not single platform!

Some people prefer the $5 option of going for Start 10 or the worst of the bunch being Classic which does not have the startup with Windows option much needed for 8! 8.1 simply allowed automatic boot to the desktop as an option while still lacking in the Start dept. 10 however is now bringing in other things you may not even be aware such as the Virtual Desktops new for 10! That alone with carrying Hyper-V 8's only saving grace there makes for a good combo! :)
