    UPDATE:
    https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/...ght/true#M7945

Hello everyone, we have received feedback from our technicians on this:

Samsung is currently reviewing customer inquiries about anomalies related to the SMART Percentage Used (on Samsung Magician) and/or Health Status (on Crystal Disk Info) of the Samsung SSD 990 PRO.

We were able to recreate the error under certain conditions of use.
To fix the problem, Samsung is expected to release a firmware update in February.

When you buy the fastest flagship SSD on the market, you expect a certain level of reliability and confidence from its performance, but things can and do go wrong sometimes, and customer support is paramount at instilling continued confidence in the brand. This has typically been the case for past Samsung drives, actually, even the non-flagship models have been highly reliable and perform excellently with very few that I have seen needing an RMA.

Colour me with sadness when within just a couple of days of buying the 990 Pro 2TB, I noticed that the drive health according to SMART data from both Samsung Magician and third party tools had dropped to 99%. For the record I have other Samsung SSDs with over 40TB written and still at 99% health 1.5 years later, so I knew this was not normal.

Within another day or so it had dropped to 98%, by this point I'd not even written 2TB to the drive. Fast forward a couple more days and the drive health was sitting at 95%

    Update - 2023.01.23
Looking at comments on the linked forums and social media, there are more people coming forward with the same issue after checking their drives. A reader on Twitter has also shared that his 990 Pro has dropped to 64% with only 2TB being written.

    Update 2 - 2023.01.23
Samsung's RMA division, Hanaro, have reached out and offered to A) Replace this SSD, and B) Try to replicate the problem. Quite why both of these options were not on the table before the issue became public is a mystery. We still request that readers continue to share their 990 Pro drive health stats and what region of the world they are in so that a better overall picture can be drawn of what appears to be a potentially developing situation.

    Update - 2023.01.24
More owners of the 990 Pro have come forward reporting degraded health reporting in another reddit thread, this time in the r/hardware subreddit.

    I installed my Samsung 990 PRO 1TB on December 15, 2022. Here's what it's reporting so far.

The history repeats itself it seems.

This issue plagued their 870 EVO drives too, i lost 3x Samsung 870 EVO 4tb drives (yes, 3 of them) due to this issue.
They would start rapidly dropping their Health after just a few TerraBytes written (lots of bad sectors on them too).

Also, i would advice people to not fully trust CrystalDiskInfo when it comes to these Samsung SSD failures.

One of the 870 EVO 4TB drives that failed for me was reported as being 99% and in "Good" health
    (according to CrystalDiskInfo).

As you can see here, CrystalDiskInfo thinks the drive is fine (but it's actually failing catastrophically):

Hard Disk Sentinel on the other hand shows a more correct picture of what's going on,
and gives the drive a Health of 74%:

Samsung's own Magician reports Defects have been detected from the device and Failing LBA:

This just goes to show that CrystalDiskInfo's "Good 99%" status is not a good indicator of the drive's actual Health
(i also lost 250 GB worth of important data on this drive, as it was not possible to copy it).

Fortunately my 2-year-old 980 PRO and six 5-year-old 850 EVOs are doing well. Glad I've been hesitating getting the 990 PRO.

980 PRO and 850 EVO are fine, and you will most likely never experience anything like this with those drives.

It's the "990 PRO" and their "870 EVO" that is plagued with issues,
i would go as far as saying those drives have a 100% failure rate.

    Wow.

I am totally shocked at these results.
I wonder if it has to do with the on-board controller?

Samsung's reputation is literally on the line with this.

    @Brink and others -

What does CrystalDiskMark or HDD Sentinel say?

People expect a minimum quality from Samsung products. Why does Samsung want to ruin its reputation with such a faulty product?

I'll keep that in mind since I'm getting ready to upgrade a laptop from 512GB to 1TB

I've used 850's in the past and never had a problem with them.

Can't say I've noticed any issues with my 870 EVO, installed last August.
