You don't have to put up with "a screen full of 16 color tiles" if you unpin them all. You can also make them smaller etc. Nothing wrong with Control panel either, very similar to what was always with bunch of new items.

I did say thanks and I do appreciate it. Just to let you know that I got the old Acer up and running dual booting 10 with 8.1. I can tolerate 10 for about an hour then I have to take a break. They have a long way to go with it before I'll use it, if at all. Realizing it’s in early stages, though.

I believe its actual name is Advanced Context Menu. Are you saying that one needs to be a power user to use it? These are all listed on the Apps Screen in 8.x. Admittedly the commoners may not use it, but just by chance they might stumble on them, open some of them up, and learn something. Education is a beautiful thing.

We power users and pros (not to say I'm a pro) think too much from our viewpoint. Let's consider the commoners in all this as I think MS does.

I'll make a deal with you. You asked that I not use Sevenosaurs and I have not since. In return I'll ask you to please not refer to the Modern as "Playskool". Others and I find that insulting. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Also, it is able to be personalized with third party programs. There are some advanced ones towards the end of this thread as users got advanced with performing personalization. All in all we find icons to be rather boring no matter where they're placed.

Post your Start Screen!

The Start Screen isn't so much about dead tiles as it is live tiles with the info they convey. Something the old Start Menus and icons don't do. I appreciate MS attempting to place tiles on the new Start Menu, but that's simply not going to work for me. I attempted to use it for a bit, but configured to boot to and use the Start Screen instead. Personally I find it to be much more efficient.

Oh, so you don't mind navigating to a different screen to perform a task after all, as we've read so many gripe about. Why not keep it simple and put it all on one screen such as the Start Screen? There's also Apps Screen if one doesn't like a large Start Screen. Actually Apps Screen is what replaces the Start Menu. Personally I place all the frequently used items on the Start Screen. I find it to be simple and efficiently quick.

So now we have Power Users Menu, PC settings, Navigation tab in Taskbar properties (which were all introduced in 8), and continue with CP. Rather redundant and confusing IMO, especially for the commoners. I’m glad I we all can tell MS exactly what I we think.

Hey HG, I think we can all agree that 10 is nowhere close to ready for prime time but it's not a bad effort for a first edition. Once you change to Start Screen instead of Start Menu, except for few things like windowed Apps and minimize/windowed/full screen commands it looks almost like 8.1.1
How much and who MS is going to listen to remains to be seen but changes are coming one way or other. It has too much of unfinished look to it weather somebody can call it nice or ugly. Just hope that they keep all options open and permit a lot of customizing to looks at least.

OK deal Tony. Glad you got your Acer PC up and running again. Yes you are a power user, anyone with your knowledge of Windows 8 is one. We must not forget we all like Windows but we all want it to be configured our way. There is another year of development and 10 of thousands of people hours to be worked on the OS yet so in reality it is to early to ell much except the start menu is back from M$.

Correction on my last post. I changed it from I to we in the last sentence. "I’m glad we all can tell MS exactly what we think".

Well, when I'm able to boot to Start Screen I think I'll be better off. That option is greyed out for now, unless it's because it doesn't detect a touch screen. Perhaps someone with a touch screen will report if it's not greyed out to use the option. Even then, Modern apps now open on the desktop and when closed, I'm left with looking at the desktop because of not returning to the Start Screen. I'm burning too many calories pushing the Windows key.

I don't have a touch screen and am able to switch but not "on the fly" have to reboot.

well i think many of them loved XP and could not look any further.

I really cannot understand someone wanting Windows 7 back, cannot understand someone is still using XP.

You must be quite young, at least by my standards. Young people embrace change, often for it's own sake. The older you get the more difficult it becomes. At my age I can easily understand someone wishing to stay with XP.

I'm no spring chicken either (66) but I'm on needles when I have to work on a system with XP, W7 not so much but do not miss it either, 8.1 was so much kinder to me. Past Alpha and Beta a lot smoother overall. Win 10, oh, we'll see yet but you can bet I'll give it a chance. As with a lot of things in my life, I'm not going to miss a chance to give almost anything a whirl.

Sorry I am a 70 year old who as had three stokes, and I love change. I like being challenged. As for XP and 7 they have taken me as far as my stroke infested brain wants to go with them. . .
