Is this a fix to the one that came out on Feb. 8th and has been causing problems for people?

    Delly,

On the second Tuesday of each month, MS release a Cumulative update. This month's is the subject of this thread.

On the third/fourth Tuesday of each month, MS release a Cumulative update preview as an Optional update. This month's is the subject of the thread that Brink posted a link to.
Previews do not contain any security updates.

Personally, I never bother with the Previews. I always wait for the next proper one.

I have 3 laptops that were updated to 21H2 in early February. I paused the Feb 8 updates to allow time for bug fixes or whatever, and this past weekend I decided to do my backups and fresh Macrium images, and then apply the updates.

Laptop 1 - done on 2/26 - everything worked normally, SFC and DISM showed no errors. Name of update showed as "2022-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5010342)."

Laptop 2 - when I turned it on on 2/27, in order to do backups and a Macrium image before applying the 2/8 updates, Windows overrode the fact that I had paused the updates and began installing KB5010342 immediately.

When I finally got logged in, I checked Windows Update Settings and they were STILL paused. In addition, in the history, the update showed as "Security Update for Windows (KB5010342)." SFC and DISM checked out okay, so I went ahead and did backups/image and then resumed Updates, which installed an additional 21H2 update. DISM and SFC still showed okay.

Laptop 3 - same thing - forced override, KB5010342 installed as a Security update, no SFC or DISM issues. Updates still paused when I checked after the forced update.

    KB5010342 Windows 10 19042.1526, 19043.1526, 19044.1526-02282022-updates.jpg

Any idea why this particular update was forcibly applied when I hit the end of February, despite the fact that my updates were paused until early March?

MS announced ages ago that certain security-related updates would be installed despite any metered connection settings set by the user.

KB4023057, which gets reissued once or twice a year, has sometimes been one of those that sneaks past despite user settings. It did so on my main computer yesterday despite my network's metered setting.

I think your 'Paused' setting must get treated in the same way as my metered setting i.e. ignored sometimes.

    All the best,

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess if the "cumulative" update contained a security fix, that would have been a reason for MS to force it through, so I guess I appreciate it even though it's also a bit annoying.

I also noticed that I got the November version and the January version of KB4023057, so I see what you mean about the reissue. It didn't sneak through, but it was applied when I resumed Updates right after the forced application of the other KB.

Anyway, thanks. Have a good day!

What surprised me is that this update got through even though I have restricted Automatic updates in the Group Policy settings.

Does some security updates even override Group Policy settings?

Yes. If deemed a necessary security update by MS.

I've had it happen, as well. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks for verifying! Got really stumped when I tried to shut down my PC and the update screen popped up.
