Command Prompt gets welcome improvements in Windows 10

    Posted: 30 Sep 2014

Microsoft’s Windows announcement is underway and Windows 10 is being unveiled. Out of some of the more exciting features unveiled, Microsoft proceeded to demo a feature that doesn’t usually get any attention during events like these; the good ‘ol Windows Command Prompt!

The new features added to the Command Prompt are labeled as “experimental” currently indicating that they may or not be part of the final release. User feedback will likely be what determines that. Some of these experimental features include Line Wrapping Selection, allowing you to easily select multiple lines of text in the editor; auto text editing when pasting that will remove added tabs and replace unrecognized fancy quotation marks into the straighter, recognized ones; text wrapping upon resizing the Command Prompt window; and the ability to adjust the opacity of the window among other features. You can read more about the new experimental features using the source link below.

FINALLY I don't have to use a clunky AHK script which more often than not would paste Unicode instead of the directory...

It took them, oh I don't know, 20 YEARS for them to update command prompt?! Wow... I just finished watching the keynote video that was posted and saw all of this and just sat, mouth ajar thinking, "Really?" That's kind of why I use PowerShell because it has all those nifty improvements.

Such a strange addition, but will probably be a hooray moment for IT admins who typically do a lot of copying and pasting into cmd prompt.

This is fantastic. I don't know how many times I've pressed Ctrl+V to paste in a Command Prompt window only to get ^V instead of the clipboard data.

Now if the make Edit mode the default so you can mark and copy without having to select Mark first and increase the default window layout I'll be really, really happy.

I don't know how many know this, but in 8.x it has a paste function in Power Shell by copying the command elsewhere then right clicking on the title bar. It automatically pastes it in the body. Not sure about Command Prompt though.

They actually did one better, shift & ctrl-select work as they would in any other application, it's truly an amazing time to be alive!

Now all they have to do is make it possible to dynamically change the window and we'll know we're living in the future :)

    Here is the video:

edit: it seems I spoke too soon, it looks at least from the demo that you can dynamically change the window size (he does it accidentally) So the future is now it seems...

I regularly experience the same problem (also in BASH). :)

The other additions sound good too.

Vertically? I think you can do that in Windows 8.1 as well, but not horizontally (at least increasing the original width). I don't see him doing horizontal resizing.

This might be really a lot of fun to play with. And it might be the deciding factor for me getting Win10.
God, I hate having to type 10 rather than 9.. :GRRR:

I just tested this, now you can do both vertical AND horizontal resizing of command prompt window.
