Updated manually installing the SSU, the LCU and finally the enablement package. Good so far.
I would let WU do it's thing, but Microsoft wants to install a bad BIOS update so... manual it is XD

    Update Dillema

ok folks i've been trying to update my machine for ages now with no success re this thread:

<Failed to Read Description. Error Code 5>

i have rectified the error code as stated in thread title but still having dramas trying to update via the Windows Update or ISO file.

    current system =

result after waiting 24 hours to go through update process

i was led to believe a driver could be the issue as far as successful windows update goes so i checked all driver updates and there was none at the time.

now yesterday i received an update for my AMD RADEON graphics so i'm thinking this might make a difference but i'm pretty fearful that if i do a windows update again it will scramble my system again and have to do a factory reset again.

Matthew Wai has been a great help but no success, any thoughts welcome

Before each Patch Tuesday I always receive an enablement Update:

To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

If you have not received this update yet you may want to give it a try.

thanks Frank, i went to Microsoft Update Catalog website and went through the 6 pages of KB4023057 and there wasn't one for my version 1909, the latest version they catered for was 1803.

there was reference to another KB5001716 but it cant be found on Microsoft Update Catalog.

    Hi@rooscoota
I had a similar problem 2 years back, could not update, and when my boot partition got currupted I turned my laptop in to Acer Services who reformatted my HDD and loaded everything (OEM OS/drivers) from scratch, since then I had only one problem with a major update and I used https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
but you probably tried that already.

anyone still having trouble with the 21H2 update i finally had success.

look here Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

dont bother with the media creation tool just download the ISO and mount it from desktop, run setup and go through the motions.

    [Run File explorer,
browse to & double-click on the ISO file to 'mount' it,
    double-click on the setup.exe file,
    click OK a few times,
make sure it shows you as keeping your files & keeping your installed applications,
slope off for a pot of tea while the computer does all the work.]

this way worked a treat after months of trying to update through WINDOWS UPDATE with constant failures and numerous factory resets.

special thanks to @Try3 who put me onto this

I do it the "Convoluted way"

Update in a VM and then do a V2P (Virtual to Physical) conversion -- to do that as well as the "Virtual device drivers" on the source VM ensure there's a standard SATA driver for the target system. Attach the target disk for the OS as a "Raw" i.e not a "Virtual disk" although a vhdx is OK if installing to vhdx files.

Use Macrium or whatever within the VM to restore / clone the VM to the target physical device, install the bootloader, boot and then update the drivers - a lot less hassle and I then have both a VM and a physical machine. If the VM update fails (it rarely does) then I haven't broken the physical machine.

OK this method isn't suitable for those who don't have a spare disk / partition for the new Windows system but given decent disk space works a treat. I use vhdx files as I have 2 versions of W10 and 2 of W11 that I can boot into on a physical system -- BTW you can also make an easy Windows to go of this also. USB3/USBC sata->USB connectors to an external SSD make this very feasable and perfectly fast enough. The only problem is that major upgradescan't be done on external devices -- that's where the "VM trick" comes in handy.

Currently as well a restored VM can run on hardware that a "Native" install won't due to "Hardware limitations in running W11 although no restrictions on W10 of course.
