The problem with using a laptop as my main machine is that I've found out the hard way that if you run a laptop 24/7, which I will do with my main machine, the motherboard has a life of just a few years.

You seem to have been unlucky, that's not been my experience. Both my systems listed in 'My Computers' below are old. System One is from 2011 and until a few months ago was my main machine, typically running whenever I'm awake and only hibernating while I sleep. Currently its hard drive (still the original) shows total powered on time of three and a half years.

System Two is a 2009 model and when I'm not using it as a test machine is literally left running 24/7 to act as a file server.

What has gone on two laptops is the processor or motherboard. The first one lost about half its speed, then the USB ports and the CD-ROM/DVD drive stopped working. The next one started locking up a few minutes after boot. None of them had HD problems. Both of them were high-end "gaming" computers (with no games installed).

Well neither of mine could be described as 'high end' even when new. But both have been powered up for well over three years each without developing any hardware faults. Sounds like the designers of yours cut one too many corners to squeeze the maximum performance out of your machines.

Both of them were fine for years. After I turned off sleep and shutdown, they lasted about a year running 24/7. Neither of them were cheap anything.
