Windows 9 Might Not Work on 32-Bit Computers – Report

    Posted: 23 Sep 2014

Windows 9 will indeed bring a lot of changes for users worldwide, but here’s something that nobody saw coming: the operating system could only work on 64-bit and 128-bit computers, which means that those with 32-bit hardware might not be able to run it.

While this is very, very unlikely given the fact that Microsoft wants and needs to make Windows 9 available to as many users as possible, reports published on the web these days claim that the company could actually focus on hardware which could make the operating system run faster and offer enhanced reliability and performance, so a 32-bit configuration might not be the best choice.

Microsoft hasn’t commented on Windows 9 rumors until now, but the company is expected to break the news on this project later this month during a press event scheduled for September 30.

A beta version of the operating system will also be released in early October, but the exact specifics of this preview will be unveiled during the September 30 event.

To be honest, I'd much rather see more 64-bit and some 128-bit support than see 32-bit support. I mean, I haven't seen a "new" computer with a 32-bit only processor (except for maybe netbooks) since ~2007. Sometimes, you just have to break down, drive into town, and buy a 5 year old used PC at Goodwill (or other thrift store).

Oh wow, I heard about this rumor of Windows 9 like three years ago. That might be interesting to see if this is true...

If that is true, that's going to be a HUGE HUGE problem for recently built Intel Atom based tablets that are running 8.1.1....

Those Atom based tablets are running 64-bit quad core processors, not the original Atom processors.

I don't think the issue will be a the inability of 32-bit processors to run the newer OS. I've seen posts by people that were upset because they couldn't run their old 16-bit software because 64-bit Win 8.x didn't support it. I'd hate to see the uproar if 128-bit Win 9 couldn't run 32-bit software.

Not quite all of them. I know for sure the ASUS T100 Transformer is a 32 bit system. That made me keep a 32 bit version of Windows 8.1.1 Core in a VM to cook custom images because I've had to deploy that out a couple of times now, all on new Windows 8 PCs.

This has me thinking that it could possibly be true even though there are a lot of 32 bit based Atom tablets out there. There's speculation that in 9, tablets smaller than 10 inches will be sans Desktop. My guess is on this, there will be a SEPERATE Windows SKU intended for those tablets and will be the only 32 bit Windows 9 platform available. Only THOSE specific tablets will be able to get that version to upgrade to.

For everyone else and every other PC, it's 64 bit only.

I say hooray because 32 bit versions of Windows aren't as secure as 64 bit counterparts and perform much better as well. Downside is obviously the loss of 32 bit only software and hardware. Printers that came out 10 years ago might not be able to work if the manufacturer hasn't been keeping up on driver software (cough cough Dell). It'll probably require virtual machining for that to happen. Makes me also wonder if 9 will have an updated Hyper-V set up, as in Windows 7's xp Mode, to enable the use of the legacy software and hardware...

But I've yet to see or hear of ANYTHING 128 bit....
