OK folks! I'll stick with LibreOffice for now. For the amount of time and effort required, Office 365 just isn't worth it. Free or not. Thanks for the info though. There might be someone out there that happens to see this can take advantage.

Question to anyone who has actually installed Office 2021 LTSC:

Is the "simplified ribbon" available in this edition? I have a perpetual Office 2019 (not Office 365) license and the simplified ribbon is not available in that edition. It is available in Office 2019 within Office 365 but not the perpetual license product.

    Nope!

M$ ruined the ribbon with the Office "VR"! (I think they mean "Visual Rubbish" not "Visual Refresh"!)… I’ve been wanting to use (Simplified Ribbon) for years, but they removed it completely from version 2021!!!!! There is nothing on the web about how and why they did that!!! They were advertising "Simplified Ribbon" in any MS Office videos since 2018, and now it has vanished!

I am a big fan of SR (=Simplified Ribbon) I don't know how I can get this feature back?!

    Office 2010 !!!!!

Sometimes software doesn't improve with new releases -- In fact if you aren't too bothered with all the "Team and collaboration" things in latest releases of Office there's almost nothing you can't do easily in Office 2010. EXCEL has a few improvments with PIVOT TABLES but you can still do that sort of stuff "The old way" and you have to be a pretty big power user to use those sorts of features.

There is no "Simplified Ribbon" in Office 2010!!! They decided to implement it (SR) to MSO 2021 then they changed their mind! It (SR) was in pilot mode (!) for about 3 years in O365 for insider users (close stuff only!). I think best and lightest version is Office 2021 (with no Visual Refresh option), the icons in ribbons are vectorized and because of that app starts super fast and has less lag when you expand or collapse ribbons!

    Hi there

Ctrl + F1 in most editions of Office gets rid of the full ribbon (or at least hides it) -- OK not quite the same thing but it's better than nothing.

As for speed of Office -- I don't have any problems with any versions whether on a VM or physical machine --If Office starts up slowly there might be other bottlenecks on your system -slow HDD's are often one cause and poor graphics / gpu card if a separate card are another..

In any case if I'm working on a spreadsheet for 30 mins or so -- why on earth would a few millisecs longer in start up bother me !!!.

OK everybody is different -- but I think here is a good quote from William Shakespeare that might be in order here :

"The Lady doth protest too much methinks " !!! (From Hamlet).

    Hi Jimbo(!)

I am aware of that magic (!) keyboard shortcut, "Ctrl+F1" or "Completely + Fade" ribbon.

It's not just about faster app start, (I have no problem with app start on my SSD), because of vector icons, the ribbon is probably lighter (!) to response in any situation (not only in app start, but in right click and … ).

SR (=Simplified Ribbon) does not hide all functions, as you know better than me it minimizes unused or better say less used commands and shows most used commands in a single row. I was crazy about that UI engineering (that M$ didn't do since Office 2007!) I am wondering why they were trying it for about 3 years?! Then it vanished! At least implement it as an extra option! Am I wrong again?

About quote! I don't know William Shakespeare.
