Yahbut, ... All three of mine are on high-speed satellite connections and all three have only SSDs (2 each), and all three took over an hour to just get the downloads. My downloads of large files from sites other than MSUpdate are fast; really fast.
The only speed problem on my computers shows up on Patch Tuesday, and only with the updates.
It's not a local problem; it's Microsoft.
I did it in less than half an hour, download part was longest at average 10Mbps internet speed.
I start the updates before I go to bed, get up in the morning and clean up all the leftovers.
Word of warning:
This update breaks printer sharing over local networks.
See here:
Possible printer issue with KB5005565
Not sure if this applies to your case, but may with others. There's this option that helps cut the download time with multiple PC updates by using my LAN for Delivery Optimization. First one takes forever but all the others get the same CU download at LAN speeds.
Worth noting, I did NOT have to set these machines for networking nor with share privileges. Also, I've noticed things like .Net and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool don't use this optimizer option and so each machine will get it's own copy from MS.
Farvatten,
I good idea that I hadn't remembered was available. I'll give it try next Patch Tuesday.
edit: Even a manual install of the KB would not work on computer 4.
24 hours later and only three out of seven computers are updated. One continually errors out. So over this.

ALSO, I just remembered this other pitfall that surprised me after some feature update and can be found under 'Advanced Options' on the same page and discussed here where I found I had to explicitly say download updates at 100%. and something I don't remember having to do before. Seemed as if MS throttled them down to 50% by default if I didn't make any changes here:
Cumulative and Feature Updates default bandwidth limited to 50%
