Yes, I know that. I've done it on my 7th Gen. I was simply pointing out the cutoff since it seemed like the poster I was replying to thought it was 9th Gen. And, of course, MS can pull the plug any time they want...
The same thing happened with Windows 10. Some people with old computers were able to install early releases of Windows 10 but at some point stopped getting any more updates.

Everyone should be able to update from Windows 10 to Windows 11 even people with non-compliant hardware. As long as these people are willing accept the consequences if things go wrong then why not? That's what backups are for.

And it will be interesting times if/when MS do pull the plug.

And for us who are afraid to take the chance. It behooves us to just wait the 5 years. MS has it's reputation to uphold. Keep everyone afraid. I for one, am glad there are those of you willing to take the chance - and stick your neck out with W 11. When brought out, W 10 was to be the final. That all updates would be to 10. No mention whatsoever about 11! And what really scares me is that some of you have had W 11 for weeks now and have no problems. And then there are others who tried 11 and went back to 10. So how are us novices to know when it's safe? I saw somewhere that with W 11, you can not uninstall Edge. Period. At least with 10, I can uninstall Edge. And when updated, I go back and uninstall it again - and again. Why is MS shoving stuff down our throats. Are we not intelligent enough to know if we want Firefox or Chrome or whatever. Edge should be a "choice", not shoved at us at every turn of the road.

    " /when MS do pull the plug."............indeed ; when ??
We have a backup of Win 10 , who wants to go back in time ( to Win10) after xxx months ?
Easy reverting your OS after a few weeks ( if Win11 does not update anymore ) , but its getting a lot difficult after a few months !

I only went back as I preferred the UI on 10 and the fewer mouse clicks. Yes, yes, I know it's a couple here and there and placing stuff in different areas but frankly couldn't be bothered. Plus there was nothing new in 11 that I wanted/needed (in my case).

My laptop is running 11 without any problems but I don't use it as often as I once did.

My spare non-compatible laptop, i5 6th generation is running 11 just to play around with and is updating from MS for now just fine but that may stop at any time.

But it's a personal choice and if you're happy with 10 then stay with it.

Pushing Edge is to 'promote' the MS search engine - advertising revenue. Pushing the store well MS aren't a charity.

Everyone IS able to upgrade to Win11, even people with noncompliant hardware. It's really not that hard.

It will be for people who don't have a good backup of Win10. I triple boot Win10, Win11, and at least one distro of Linux. When MS pulls the plug on 11, zero impact on my workflow.

You do NOT have to update to 11. And if you do, and find you don't like it, just go back to 10. It's as simple as that. I know that people love to be outraged these days, and say the phrase "shove down our throats", but you are not without agency in this. You do not NEED Windows 11, and if you find it odious, don't use it!

the upgrade is always free because W10 and W11 use the same digital licence for activation.
That was re-assuring to know. At least I have my licence all set.

I have read posts here where some people with old computers updated to Windows 10. Their updates stopped at Windows 10 1909. The seemed content to accept this and stay with Windows 10. Probably most people that update to Windows 10 don't really want to go back to Windows 7 unless they have no choice. I had to do this with one old laptop I have.

If you update to Windows 11 and worry about having to go to Windows 10 in the future you should:
    • Back up your computer regularly to an external drive
    • Have install media for any programs you need to reinstall
    • Have Product Keys for all programs that need it
    • Have a flash drive with the latest install of Windows 10
    • Have a flash drive with the program to restore you computer from the external drive

Doing this will allow to reinstall Windows if necessary with a minimal loss of data. All you really lose is time.

The above recommendation should be followed whatever reason you need to install Windows. Otherwise, you will post on here some time in the future saying "My computer died...now what should I do? I'm sure you don't want to hear that you have to start over."

The easiest way to deal with this is to keep running 10 until it's absolutely clear that 11 is a significant improvement. I don't find that it is yet, but will keep a close check to see when/if it happens. In the meantime, TMP remains disabled to avoid any sneak attack.

Windows 11 is a truly impressive OS that offers a unique digital experience, thanks to all those newly included features. There is no doubt that it runs smoother and much faster than the previous operating system. However, this only happens on performant PCs and not on old devices.
Via a series of optimisations and performance improvements, Windows 11 is expected to feel significantly faster than Windows 10, even when running on identical hardware. ... That includes improved memory management, which allows Windows 11 to better prioritise apps and processes that are used most often.
