The article linked to earlier includes this statement ...

Intel said that Spectre and Meltdown were addressed with hardware-level changes starting with Intel 8th-generation CPUs.
Isn’t it interesting that Windows 11 requires 8th-generation CPUs or newer? We imagine this is related.

this does explain why the breakpoint was set so high ...

When the requirements were first released I did some research into the intel Gen 6, 7, and 8 processors which are all using similar architecture ... there were major coding changes made part way through the life cycle of the Gen 7 processors so some later models had the protective code against the two major attack vectors- and so could meet the requirements for running Windows 11 which Microsoft did comment on without much explanation why - this does make a little sense as the Windows 10 software fix for the malware caused windows to slow down so windows 11 could take advantage of the the hardware to improve performance.

Of course this also means that Microsoft have avoided stating openly that all pre hardware update, processors are potentially till at risk
    Hi there
"potentially at Risk" can cover a multitude of sins -- some people are still scared of flying - even though the chances of an accident are far higher on the way to the airport than actually taking the flight (even if I were the Pilot !!!).

As I mentioned previously security on a lot of systems for loads of users can be hideously overdone -- I agree for businesses etc it's very important but I doubt whether it's of a huge concern to zillions of HOME users who won't be effected - so Windows 10 will be just fine -- no need to "slow it down" to add W11 type of security.

People will get scammed much more by using Social media --e.g giving out too much info so identity fraud etc is more easily available and also by getting careless in using e-mail etc.

I'm all in favour of SENSIBLE security but some of the new systems are counter productive and Hollywood has easily shown the dangers and work arounds of using biological security features. I'm sure people don't want to see "sawn off thumbs" or removed eyeballs being used to break the security loopholes -- Hollywood has shown in principle the idea -- and I'm sure there's enough rogue engineers out there who could actually make that gruesome stuff work.

I'm sure come Halloween (a hideous US invention rapidly spreading its unwelcome way to Europe) there will be a spate of Horror flics on TV using these processes.

    Cheers

What about "Better safe than sorry" or " Prevention is half the battle" or "One apple a day keeps malware away" ?

Where are you seeing/hearing that any increased security with Win 11 will "slow it down"? Seems this is the type of speculation that gets propagated and blown out of proportion.

Yes, those had security problems although probably mitigated by now thru micro code, BIOS or windows update.

The slowdown is nothing to do with Windows 11, but when they wrote the software fix for Spectre et- al, on Windows 10, it purposely slowed down some windows processors to allow other new software coding the time to prevent the malware taking hold. since the Spectre Incidents Intel have redesigned the processor chips to prevent the attack from working ( as have AMD in their 2000 range of Rysen Processors and higher )

by taking advantage of the new processor architecture built in to the Gen 8 (and some late Gen7) processors Windows 11 does not have the intentional slow down code so runs faster

However if the processors without the upgrades at processor level, (most of the Gen7 and earlier) were used with Windows 11 they would lose the protection built into Windows 10 and not have the processor architecture fix so would be more vulnerable than they are remaining on Windows 10 .
