Now I don't know if I'm "Normal" or "Abnormal" user and wonder who's gonna place me in either category ? I value my security but stop bellow paranoiac level. Some of my backup disks are bitlocked, some not. My banking and other financial dealings are dome thru Live Linux on a usb.

That will be the worlds first official "Y3K" project (year 3000 -- NOT a leap year !!) when Windows finally becomes stable !!!!

Looking at the link, Windows 11 available on October 5 | Windows 11 Forum

Here is what Windows 11 will bring, followed by my user thoughts on it.

    1. The new design and sounds are modern, fresh, clean and beautiful, bringing you a sense of calm and ease.

I have absolutely no need for any of the above. Really? "..a sense of calm and ease"???

    2. With Start, we’ve put you and your content at the center. Start utilizes the power of the cloud and Microsoft 365 to show you your recent files no matter what device you were viewing them on.

I do not use "the cloud", nor do I want MS to have copies of my documents, so I do not use Microsoft 365. I'm happy to keep my files on the machine that created them, or to use my network to send them to another machine, not to put them on a server where I am datamined.

    3. Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops provide an even more powerful way to multitask and optimize your screen real estate.

Third-party developers (Fences?) have done this. Glad to see I could "multitask" and "optimize". Seriously, how would this allow a "powerful way to multitask"???

    4. Chat from Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar provides a faster way to connect to the people you care about.

So, if I don't use Chat to "connect", I don't care about these people? I have a phone. I can call, I can text, I can email, I can facetime. Now, they've added Chat? What if they're offline? Oh, I get it: we're supposed to hook our phones to our computer login, so we're always tethered.

    5. Widgets, a new personalized feed powered by AI, provides a faster way to access the information you care about, and with Microsoft Edge’s world class performance, speed and productivity features you can get more done on the web.

I'm not impressed by Widgets thus far. What does the new iteration bring?

    6. Windows 11 delivers the best Windows ever for gaming and unlocks the full potential of your system’s hardware with technology like DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage and Auto HDR. With Xbox Game Pass for PC or Ultimate you get access to over 100 high-quality PC games to play on Windows 11 for one low monthly price. (Xbox Game Pass sold separately.)

I do game. A lot. I want nothing to do with this, however.

    7.
Windows 11 comes with a new Microsoft Store rebuilt with an all-new design making it easier to search and discover your favorite apps, games, shows, and movies in one trusted location. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months.

I really don't want anything from the MS store, thus far. What do they have that would make me want to start another account?

    8. Windows 11 is the most inclusively designed version of Windows with new accessibility improvements that were built for and by people with disabilities.

    I am not disabled.

    9. Windows 11 unlocks new opportunities for developers and creators. We are opening the Store to allow more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to bring their apps to the Store, improving native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it easier for you to refresh the look and feel across all our app designs and experiences.

    I am not a developer.

    10. Windows 11 is optimized for speed, efficiency and improved experiences with touch, digital pen and voice input.

I do not use voice input. I tried several iterations of Dragon Natural Speak. It was very prone to errors. I'm not sure how well voice control of a computer would make my computing experience better or faster. Other than having others stare at me as I shout, "Computer, determine the best recipe for rice pudding."

    11. Windows 11 is the operating system for hybrid work, delivering new experiences that work how you work, are secure by design, and easy and familiar for IT to deploy and manage. Businesses can also test Windows 11 in preview today in Azure Virtual Desktop, or at general availability by experiencing Windows 11 in the new Windows 365.

Lucky me, my computers are for my use, not for work use. So, no IT manager uses it or has access to it.

    ^^^
All the above are my initial impressions about the MS reasons for using Windows 11. None of them apply to me. I like Windows 10. I have it running on 7 computers. It is stable and it works. (Some networking niggles. It (network) has to be reset every now and again.) Otherwise, it has been very good.

I don't want to join "the cloud". Is this the only way Windows will work in the future.

And, whatever happened to the whole, Windows 10 will be our last OS as we will just update it as we go, thing?

    Just my .02...

Most people don't use everything any OS contains but unless you can order an OS that's just according to your wishes developer has offer something for everybody. Most of unwanted stuff can be either uninstalled or just ignored. You are not disabled ? Good for you but it borders on being self centered about people with some disabilities to allow them to use OS. Gamer ? OK there's something for you too. Depending on your HW and games, DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage and Auto HDR. Once game developers start using those your gaming can become better and more pleasurable.
Voice input ? Some relay on it a lot together with other tools. Why use or pay for some 3rd party programs like Fences if you can have them integrated for free ?
    Etc, etc.

    Hi there
If it works properly, has decent security in it and runs on reasonable hardware - why on earth worry about if it has "Features" you don't use.

I'll bet for example about 99.9% of EXCEL users on this board only have ever used about 25% of the possibilities in EXCEL -- probably they could run EXCEL 2007 without any problem -- ask them what a Pivot table is and you'll probably get some blank stare. The fact that there are features useful to others is not IMO an objection to using an OS.

If you are really are concerned about an OS that only has features you want and need - build yourself a Linux system.

I don't game but I'm happy for Windows Graphics to be improved to make gaming better for those that do - etc etc.
I'll agree there's absolutely nothing I've ever wanted from the Ms Store -- that concept was just a "Copy from Apple feature" but again you aren't forced to use it.

You mean the security features that only Windows 11 can provide? Is that really true or is it what Microsoft wants us to believe?
Right now Windows 11 does not provide any enhanced security features over Windows 10, but it is realistic to think/believe that there is research and development underway on this. It may not be dramatic, more likely incremental. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

    Hi there
once TPM is implemented with keys etc in W11 then security will be considerably enhanced over W10 as Ms won't retrofit TPM keys and encryptions to W10.

Whether some of this extra security layer is really necessary on typical HOME (not Work or Corporate) machines is obviously open to question -- my view is that HOME users are more likely to be scammed rather than suffer serious breaches of computer hacking and virus penetration but one could discuss that stuff for years and still have different opinions.

Too much security means people devise all sorts of ways of getting round it -- to little could be a problem. The difficulty is in getting it just right . I'm really annoyed by the EU/EEA requirement that online banking requires a "call back" via texting a code which you have to enter in. It's an extra annoyance which really some decent security guy should be able to find a better answer for.

Not sure if that 2-level process is required in UK / USA / AUS/NZ etc but it can be really annoying.

The article linked to earlier includes this statement ...

Intel said that Spectre and Meltdown were addressed with hardware-level changes starting with Intel 8th-generation CPUs.
Isn’t it interesting that Windows 11 requires 8th-generation CPUs or newer? We imagine this is related.

this does explain why the breakpoint was set so high ...

When the requirements were first released I did some research into the intel Gen 6, 7, and 8 processors which are all using similar architecture ... there were major coding changes made part way through the life cycle of the Gen 7 processors so some later models had the protective code against the two major attack vectors- and so could meet the requirements for running Windows 11 which Microsoft did comment on without much explanation why - this does make a little sense as the Windows 10 software fix for the malware caused windows to slow down so windows 11 could take advantage of the the hardware to improve performance.

Of course this also means that Microsoft have avoided stating openly that all pre hardware update, processors are potentially till at risk
