    Using the principles above, we are confident that devices running on Intel 8th generation processors and AMD Zen 2 as well as Qualcomm 7 and 8 Series will meet our principles around security and reliability and minimum system requirements for Windows 11. We also know that devices running on Intel 6th generation and AMD pre-Zen will not. As we release to Windows Insiders and partner with our OEMs, we will test to identify devices running on Intel 7th generation and AMD Zen 1 that may meet our principles. We’re committed to sharing updates with you on the results of our testing over time, as well as sharing additional technical blogs.

    Just my 2 cents.
    I am surprised that Microsoft would pressure quite a lot of users to upgrade (if they want Windows 11) especially at at time when things seem to be scarce all the way around. I'm personally running an 11 year old machine knowing I was on borrowed time, but was intending to upgrade in the near future anyway. I'll bet a lot of users were not intending to upgrade their system(s) this soon.
    I understand the need for increased security with the rampant hacking going on, but I think it would have been better to make the upgrade possible without the TPM and UEFI requirements with the caveat that they are knowingly running less secure systems.

    Now that I let my steam out. I want to ask about the TPM. As I try to learn about this it seems that there is some sort of crypto key in the module or firmware on the CPU that encrypts the data on the users hard drive. Is that correct ? And if that is correct how will a DIY unencrypt the data should the user want to remove an SSD or hard drive to another system?
    I'm just thinking what if a user had a motherboard failure or installed a new updated motherboard, what about the their hard drive data that was encoded with the old motherboard TPM key?

    On computers without TPM, the Microsoft installer displays this warning: “This PC cannot run Windows 11; this PC does not meet the minimum system requirements needed to install this version of Windows”.

    Windows 11 prevents installation on PCs without TPM (Image: Playback / Windows Latest)

    To get around this, just do the following:

    1. at the screen with the incompatibility warning, press Shift + F10 to open the command prompt;
    2. type regedit.exe and press Enter ;
    3. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup and create a new key named LabConfig ;
    4. in the LabConfig key, create two new entries:
    5. BypassTPMCheck = dword: 00000001
    6. BypassSecureBootCheck = dword: 00000001
    7. save the changes.

    • The compatibility error message will no longer be displayed.
    • This also helps to avoid the Secure Boot requirement.There's a more complex solution, which involves making a change to the Windows 11 installation media.
    • Basically, you swap the appraiserres.dll file in the Sources folder with the version of that file from a Windows 10 ISO.
    • Once that's done, you recreate the ISO image using a tool like Rufus or AnyBurn, and performs the installation.
    • Save this (.reg) file in a USB drive and perform a clean installation of Windows 11 when it is officially released.
    • During the installation process, press Shift + F10 and type notepad and hit enter.
    • In Notepad, open the file menu and locate and apply the reg file.
    • This will bypass the TPM+SecureBoot requirements.

    Method 2:

    1. Create your own installation mediaThe second method involves modifying the ISO file.
    2. If you want to upgrade the operating system by running the setup.exe directly from Windows 11 media image, there’s another simple workaround.
    3. You need to replace the appraiserres.dll in the sources folder on your installation media with the version of that file from a Windows 10 ISO.
    4. Once done, you need to recreate the ISO image using a third-party tool like Rufus or AnyBurn, and run the setup file again.
    5. If you want to deploy the new OS on multiple machines for a clean installation, you can always use Windows ADK to automate the process and create your own ISO.

    It's also worth noting that these workarounds have been tested with the leaked build of Windows and they may or may not work when the OS is released later this year or early next year.

    For now, it looks like it would be possible to bypass these restrictions by making changes to the default installation process.
    It’s also pretty obvious that TPM is not something that is fundamentally needed for Windows 11.

    emailx45Thanks for that post hope I don't nee that work around just yet.

    fdegrove I did read that in addition to what I have already read and digested, but it didn't answer my question about changing HS s for example. It appears that each time a system with TPM turned on it checks the system configuration to be sure it hasn't been altered. One would think that a new hard drive would be setting up all sorts of red flags and not allowing a proper boot.

    Not knowing maybe it's just a simple turning off the TPM when changing to a new hard drive then turning it back on after another reboot ?

    We also know that devices running on Intel 6th generation and AMD pre-Zen will not [meet our principles around security and reliability and minimum system requirements for Windows 11].
    Well, I would really like to read a bit more insightful explanation straight from the horse's mouth why would that be the case?

    Especially as I understand it (I am not CPU aficionado though) there's hardly any difference in architecture between the two except improvements related to 4K & HEVC and PlayReady 3.0 (just give me a break...) in Gen7.

    Because Intel gen 8 was the first that has hardware fixes for spectre!

    Very good point indeed - but had not (some? all? I forget) SPECTRE fixes been addressed on an OS level (microcode fix), from 1809 onwards?

    No need to worry, it does nothing that you and I would notice when HW is changed.

    How to download Windows 11 on PC

    First of all, remember that this is a test version of Windows 11: that is, it will definitely have bugs and instabilities, just so that Microsoft receives feedback from millions of PCs to make all the adjustments to the system. Avoid installing on your primary machine (or partition).
    To download Windows 11, you must be currently using Windows 10 on your computer. So just follow these steps:

    1. go to Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics and Feedback and activate the Optional diagnostics data option (this is mandatory in Windows Insider);
    2. then follow the path Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program ;
    3. click Start Now ;
    4. choose a Microsoft account (or login) and follow the instructions .

    If you prefer, you can do a clean install by downloading the Windows 11 ISO image from the Microsoft website ; in this case, you must also be an Insider member.
    Windows 11 Preview runs on my PC?

    There are two different scenarios to be able to test the upgrade:

    • if you were already part of the Insider program as of June 24, 2021, you can install Windows 11 even on incompatible hardware;
    • if you are entering the Insider program now , your computer must have compatible processor and TPM 2.0 module.

    If you were not an Insider before and you have an Intel or AMD processor released before 2017 , the system will display the following message:
    Your computer does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11. Channel options will be limited.
    In this case, you will be able to install future previews of Windows 10, which will continue to receive updates and support until October 2025.
    If you were an Insider before June 24, Microsoft will make an exception . However, the company "recommends that PCs meet all hardware requirements for the best experience when using Windows 11 builds in the Insider Preview." Here's how to know if your PC meets the minimum requirements to run Windows 11.
