Do you have a dying disk?
Ordinarily, I would agree -- but for two things. First, this is an SSD and I have tested it for errors and it checks out OK time and time again. Second, I tried the same thing on another, also working, SSD and it develops the same issues. Both of these SSDs have been replaced by m.2 SSDs on my desktop -- but they were working fine before I did that replacement and running disk tests finds no errors on either of them.

    Insider Beta version crashing

To add more information ...Further complication is that when the Insider OS crashes, it puts up a message along the lines of Your Insider ... issues and starts the dreaded Automatic Repair loop which fails. So, I then reboot into my production Win10 disk, run disk check on the SSD -- and it finds no errors. I then reboot into the Insider disk, and it repeats the same problems. I then reboot into the production OS disk, restore the Insider disk from an MR image and reboot into the Insider OS. It then runs OK but restarts the Windows Update process and eventually crashes again. So to me, that indicates a problem with the Insider OS, not the disk.

Also, I am running an Insider Beta using one SSD and an Insider Dev using a different SSD. So to experiment, I imaged the Insider Dev to the currently failing Insider Beta SSD. I then ran it for hours with no issues at all. So, that further leads me to believe it is not a disk issue but something with the Insider Beta OS.

Definitely seems like a software incompatibility with your system. I remember you've tried a repair install but can't remember if you've tried a clean install. Has cured things for me in the past.

Or the step between In-place and Clean. Try a Reset. It completing replaces the OS.

got a chance to grab the KB5003690 x64 cab file last night from a uup dump and manually installed it with dism.exe and rebooted.

so far no serious problems found with KB5003690 on my test PC running Win10 21H1 education edition.

Has anyone had issues with the MS Store since this update? Got 2 PCs and when I click on a game/app in the store to get the details, the circle just constantly goes round and round, the page won't load. Store loads and I can manually update apps.

Final update -- I can confirm there is no basic instability issue with build 1081 and apparently, no issue with my drive.

I disconnected the network cable -- to prevent Windows Updates -- and used the BETA OS for several hours -- without any issues at all. No crashes. No file system errors.

So to me, at least, this points to one of the additional Windows Updates as the culprit since, without attempting those, my Beta installation works fine.
