I'm not one of these people who use the OS as an application end in itself. The idea of just endlessly tinkering with Windows, and its auxiliary programs like Word Pad, Paint, Edge, etc., bores me silly, actually. No matter what platform I've used over the past decades, the OS for me is always primarily a gateway to the third-party software and hardware I really want to buy and run. For me, that is the chief value of an OS. Win10 does that job better than any other OS on the planet--supports more third-party software and hardware, as well as maintains a fair bit of backwards compatibility with some older programs--like 30-year-old games, for instance. I still own a few, actually. Win10 is thin (getting bulkier though) and light compared to many earlier versions of Windows and doesn't often get in my way when I'm running the software I want to run. It does the job but doesn't call attention to itself while doing its thing...but like I say, Microsoft is letting the feature-creep run amok again, and many already think it far too bloated.

But this Win11 thing seems really goofy, so far. Seems Microsoft has to make the licensing seamless with Win10--retail versions are supported for the life of the user and OEM versions for the life of the motherboard, etc. If not, I can already see the lawsuits flying. It just seems strange.
Ultimately yes, it's one third of a device, 1/3 Hardware. 1/3 OS and 1/3 Software (Programs APPs, Games......), without each of those parts it's not whole. OS is supposed to make bridge between Hardware and Software so they can do actual work but....
Windows and most other OSs became an "Operating environment" of which actual OS is just one part and the rest of it is just added software to make it so-so usable at first installation.
Largest part is GUI, APIs and applets most of which are not even developed by MS but either licensed or leased form other sources.

I've not gone over all the pages in this thread so this may have been discussed before.

I'm just thinking about RTM and the timeline is all wrong!!!

If I recall correctly, they need to have RTM by the end of September so OEMs can have the new OS on PCs for the Holiday season, releasing a new OS for testing on 24th June would not give the necessary time for testing and bug squashing.

I'm thinking we are looking at something more like pre summer (late spring 2022), for a release or even the 2022 Holiday period.

Of course there are other variables, how old is the leaked copy, how far along is the current active build, is this just a visual overhaul, or is there a raft of hardware support / feature coding that will take much longer to Beta Test by the Insiders , and Microsoft's internal testers

My thinking about it too, On 24th they may announce it and make it available to insiders first. There was a hint about it in e-mail they sent me. Right at bottom there was suggestion to and how to join Insider program.

Without a doubt, you will need to be an insider to download it.

Really nice to think we’d be included in evaluating the build.
Will this current Dev version build 21996.1 ( known as leaked build.) be upgraded to beta or other version on 6/24?
    Thank you.

An estimate could be made by mounting the wim/esd index with DISM and checking the timestamp on system files. Without even installing.

Licensing really baffles me some times. My two laptops and two desktops all have multiple Digital Licenses as a result of my testing. Those DL's came from my Technet / VS Enterprise sub. I just gave my spare tower to a relative that had their tower die. All those DL's went with it. Including one for 10 Enterprise that got a DL with my MAK key. I guess I could have, one at a time, transferred them to a new device? I don't have said new device and don't really want to take the time to do that. On the tower I gave away I installed 10 Pro and left it at the Out Of the Box Experience screen for them to setup. They get a free Windows 10 Pro, and 10 Education, and 10 Enterprise etc. I used the generic 10 Pro key, no way for the new owner to get my Technet key that way.
