Another month, another messed up update.

20 minutes in at 26%. So tired of this.
    You can always opt out.

I can't help wondering if Microsoft is really testing or just giving us something to do.
I too kind think a bit like you!

One day you will open the valve on this pipeline and a brand new Baby 11 will come squealing out! Spank it on the butt and send it straight to the Debug ICU.
    Nice and profound thoughts!

Will this forum be renamed the Windows 11 forum? Something to muse about for the next two weeks.

Unfortunately it is the true! But I hate it, the one that came I guess yesterday on the laptop it stood there on "Changes are underway" (or something like) for 1 hour and it never finished so, I had to turn it off and back on again and then the it update OK.
So much for an update that does nothing.
Failure is important part of testing, if it doesn't fail at least some times an at some conditions, there would be no point.

I think we all realise that testing new builds always will throw out defects -- since Windows is used on such a variety of different hardware and different applications it really is impossible for even Ms to test the whole kybosh 100% - apart from having to deal with errors not of its own making -- e.g errors in 3rd party hardware drivers from different manufacturers etc.

What though IMO is really unforgiveable are absolutely basic errors that have absolutely no place in any software that's "escaped" from the development labs into the public domain. My classic case is that of W2K22 Server being released for preview when as a normal user you can't activate it and it doesn't even SERVE !!!. I've posted about that in the Virtualisation section -- also the fact that you can't change the WORKGROUP name any more so even for s piece of test software Ms expects you to rename every single computer on your network.

Those sorts of errors - absolutely basic - are IMO inexcusable even for pre-pre-pre-alpha software !!!!.

    Cheers

In various threads, here for instance, I see more and more these "Windows 11" speculations.

    My two Euro cents:

I'll eat a can of cat food in live video broadcasting, if Windows 11 will be announced this month.

I am absolutely sure, that Windows 10 will later be renamed simply Windows, no number. If that's not happening during Big Announcement on June 24th (it won't happen yet, I think), then latest when extended support for Windows 8 ends on January 10th, 2023, or sometime soon after that date. At that point, what we know as Windows 10 will be the only remaining (supported) consumer version, and dropping the digits would only be logical.

In my opinion, Ten Forums owner @z3r010 already has and owns the best possible domain / site for foreseeable future, considering that Windows.com is owned by Microsoft, and they will never sell it.

I am of course talking about Windows Questions, our sister site. Would be nice to see all of you geeks sign up there: Windows Questions

I think that MS is pulling everybody's leg with those so called "leaks and clues". Anything that suggests 11 is purely coincidental.

    Hi there
    Thanks

Never knew about that one -- might be good also for questions pertaining to Windows SERVERS as well instead of "contaminating / obfuscating" W10 matters -- I'm sure loads do use servers for learning, testing and whatever !!

Be careful about that tin of cat food -- might be worth trying to get hold of some Russian / Israeli / N.Korean / Chinese hackers to "interfere" with the Ms announcement -- so be careful on that one. !!!!!!

Logically WINDOWS should be the name but while there's still loads of flavours out there which will still be used in VM's for years. Changing the name to just WINDOWS might create a lot of extra confusion. I'm still using on a daily basis an XP virtual machine - and how many years has it been since XP was officially dropped. !!! and I'm not the only one.

Same with LINUX - although most kernel commands are standard there's a load of different distributions so when saying Install xxx on Linux it will depend on what distro you are using.

(As far as VM's are concerned - too many people are over concerned with Internet and security -- loads of the older VM's are used as stand alone applications where Internet and being online at all times isn't an issue -- scheduling tasks for using huge expensive plant which can have a life cycle of over 50 - 60 years isn't at any risk of being attacked by todays hackers -- I don't think most of them would be the slightest bit interested in the inner workings of JCB's etc. on a large CIVILS project. !!).

    Cheers

They may not be interested in the inner workings of JCBs but ransomware is universal Jimbo.
