    Screwing up simple accessory applications many users depend on... Sounds like a great opportunity for an enterprising coder to start a utility package...
    Those "enterprising coders" you speak of have been creating alternative utilities and apps for years.

    I just visited the Microsoft Store and found 189 versions of text editors. I'd say there's no way Microsoft could mess that up. I found 27 photo editors, 14 of which are free and the rest are reasonably priced. I used Paintshop Pro for years until Corel bought it up and ruined it. I looked for spreadsheets and got a conglomeration of 240 apps from spreadsheets to full office suits.

    The way I look at it is that by Microsoft moving some of its utilities to the Microsoft Store, it's finally "moving over" and letting the little guy have a whack at some of the utilities we all depend on rather than gobble them up and making them part of Windows. When you put an app/utility in the Microsoft Store, it's in competition with others like it.

    Looks to me that instead of messing up simple accessory applications, Microsoft is opening them up to competition.

    Notepad3 BETA/RC-channel access . Issue #1129 . rizonesoft/Notepad3 . GitHub

    There is also Notepad++
    Notepad++

    ooh some one else noted Notepad++ above me.. lol
    Interesting I have notepad2, and the author is the same first listed author as notepad3, why not keep it on same website? so notepad 3 is basically next version of notepad2?

    Notepad and Paint as well, they turned them into buggy store apps, currently looking for a replacement.
    You can get them from one of your pre-21H1 system images

    Hello @mangorunner,

    I DON'T want to go off topic, but just to give you an alternative which I use [ as well as Notepad ] . . .

     Notepad++

    Basically, Notepad++ it is a text and source code editor that is more powerful than the basic Notepad editor. One advantage that I find extremely useful on a regular basis is that it can Compare text files and Highlights the differences between two or more files. To use the Compare feature you will need to download the Compare Plugin.

    Notepad++ and the Compare Plugin are FREE.

    > Website & Download => Notepad++ [ Download ]
    > Compare Plugin Download => Notepad++ [ Compare Plugin ] - SourceForge. Net

    I just thought you might find this useful!

    I hope this helps.
    I've used Notepad++ and like it.

    OK, this is just crazy!

    In looking at the Start Menu in Insider Preview I find the following "oldies" that haven't been there before:

    Notepad
    Paint
    Snipping Tool
    One Note
    One Note for Windows 10

    I don't know about One Note, but am I correct in that the first three are supposedly slated for deletion from Windows and/or will be available from the Microsoft Store?

    Additionally, I'm wondering why both One Note and One Note for Windows 10?
