    Its all about the developers, times have changed since 20 years ago.

    20 years ago the end users were king, developers added what we wanted, maintained multiple branches for years no problem.

    Now days they only want to develop in newer easier to use languages hence the rarity of plain C and win32 slowly fading away, plus of course new ideas vs what the older generation of developers had, but to me the big one is the mindset, its now developers who are king not the end users. They make what they want, how they want it, and we consume what is given.

    I'm not sure we should simply consume what's given. I won't miss Notepad, I never used it - using Emacs as a text editor, but Paint is occasionally useful since it's lightweight and simple. The new 3Dpaint thing is in fact buggy - it can't even save a file, and so it's completely useless. Whatever they came up with to replace Snipping Tool is similarly bad. Quite honestly, I don't understand why working programs such as Paint and Snipping Tool should be forcibly retired. But then again, I despise the whole "software as a service" concept as well.

    They're still available:

    Both applications can be updated separately in the future and pushed to user systems without having to wait for operating system updates to release the updates.

    Microsoft Paint and Snipping Tool are now on the Microsoft Store

    I just noticed that Paint has been removed from my computer. When I search all that's listed is Paint 3D.

    Edit: I think MS is playing games. On the Start Menu Paint is still there but when I search for paint it's not listed. I always started Paint by clicking on Start and typing Paint and it would show up Now only Paint 3D shows up.

    Hi,

    "Start, Run: Mspaint " should launch it.

    I hope they don't do anything with Notepad. Yikes! I use it every single day and it resides on my Taskbar. I would miss it tremendously.

    I DON'T want to go off topic, but just to give you an alternative which I use [ as well as Notepad ] . . .

     Notepad++

    About Notepad++:

    Notepad++ is a FREE source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GNU General Public License.

    Based on the powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. By optimizing as many routines as possible without losing user friendliness, Notepad++ is trying to reduce the world carbon dioxide emissions. When using less CPU power, the PC can throttle down and reduce power consumption, resulting in a greener environment.

    Basically, Notepad++ it is a text and source code editor that is more powerful than the basic Notepad editor. One advantage that I find extremely useful on a regular basis is that it can Compare text files and Highlights the differences between two or more files. To use the Compare feature you will need to download the Compare Plugin.

    Notepad++ and the Compare Plugin are FREE.

    > Website & Download => Notepad++ [ Download ]
    > Compare Plugin Download => Notepad++ [ Compare Plugin ] - SourceForge. Net

    I just thought you might find this useful!

    I hope this helps.

    Windows 10 feature update makes Notepad a separate Store app

    If you can not even open txt, because of million OS dependencies, that is just wrong.
    I just went to my Dev Build 21354, and Notepad opened just fine for me. No problem at all.

    Hi,
    Same happened with newer snipping tool and 3dpaint were added
    All I needed was a folder with copies of paint and snipping tool along with en-US folder off win-7 and they work now.
    Wonder if notepad would too ?
    The sign that came up told me to try Windows Logo+Shift+S and it works just fine. However, I don't understand why I would want both Snip & Sketch and the Snipping Tool. Especially since the Snipping Tool has been gone for quite awhile. It's beyond me why MS decided to revive it.
