@waltc,
Still would be nice to know which drivers area failing, given that not everybody with a Realtek Ethernet has this problem.
Well that was weird. It eventually came back with the check for updates button. No restart request but I restarted anyway and it sat on a blue Updates are in progress do not turn off your device. Eventually it got to the login screen with no update progress and seems to have updated according to Winver.
Just updated to 21327.1010. Interestingly, it went quite fast on my 2012-vintage Lenovo X220 Tablet (under 5 minutes from start to finish) and took about three times as long on my 2018-vintage Lenovo X380 Yoga (especially for the post-GUI install for whatever odd reason: it just churned and churned).
Go figure! But it's all done now...

Gigabyte's H81M Onboard realtek NIC seems to be affected. Manually installing the driver DID help. And that is NOT EVEN INSIDER! That is a stable rig!
This is a 2015 driver and I was able to pull an identification string that actually suits many NIC controllers:
rt640x64.sys
Now this baby needs manual installing. Thanks for the tip
Very quick. No countdown numbers with reboot screen, just a message telling you to keep computer on.
Scan time for windows security too long. Over 5 minutes for 500 gb ssd with little more than operating system on it. On other drive, same computer, took 2 minutes for a 500 gb ssd with lots of files and programs
