Okay, frig-off MS!
You proclaim a new feature from the roof tops with all the pomp and circumstance of a royal wedding,
then deny half the population to even see it let alone use it!!!
Gettin sick of their stupid tactics!
Useless feature anyway!
Can't update from 21296 to 21318 build
After 60% during installation, my PC restarts and displays a "recovering installation, undoing changes made to the computer" message. After, Windows Update shows an installation error: 0xc1900101
Have not had this happen in quite a while. 21318 reverted back to 21313??? Having a second go at it now.
Odd l3 bench , with this build , bench every build , first ever seeing this.
I have installed this version just to get DoH, since the fake 21H1 update did not deliver.
It took about 15 mins to install, I was getting worried, when it got stuck at 72% though.
P.S. Any idea how to setup encrypted DNS via reg? It is set to unencrypted by default.
I don't want to see the News. I don't want any of that clutter on the taskbar. But thanks for the suggestion...
Anyway, I found out what it's called--"The Weather Card" and turning it off is as simple as invoking the internal menu item "Hide weather card"...! Somehow I didn't see that at first.
EDIT: well that didn't work--weather card came right back after I "hid" it. Turns out the whole thing is tied to Edge and after you turn off the "cards" completely inside Edge you have to reboot for the changes to take place--because just signing out and in won't do it.
Then, now that the weather card is gone--now I get what appears to be a permanent taskbar icon in my systray--looking like the outline of a newspaper in white. It's there whether I like it or not, apparently, as I can find no place to turn it off as it isn't listed as a taskbar icon, which it is. All of this and I don't even have a "News and Interests" menu item! The new, undocumented newspaper taskbar icon goes straight to Edge, bypassing my OS default browser!
This is not fun--Microsoft wants to hook me up with Edge whether I like it or not--Edge is not the default browser, but that no longer matters, I guess. I'll keep looking for a way to get rid of this.
Meanwhile, if anyone has a suggestion...?
OK...solved it. Went to Apps, uninstalled Edge. Rebooted. Problem solved. You know, I really had no objection to Edge being installed so long as it was well-behaved and I could decide when it would run. But if Microsoft is going back to forcing it to run for certain things, over my objections, I'm just not interested. At least, however, they let me uninstall the thing!
Proper behavior for this functionality would be to use my default browser as a link to MSN news, and provide a convenient way to disable the function. I could then have left Edge installed.
