I had the exact same problems with my installation. After an apparently successful installation, I had a black screen with cursor and the Task Manager would shut down immediately before I could manually try to run explorer.exe. After several reboots I finally rentered my desktop, but Windows Update wasn't working. Scannow & DISM reported no errors. Another reboot took me back into black screen hell, where it took several more reboots before I was finally able to reboot again into a crippled Windows environment where most of my apps would not work (i.e. they would either open with an error message or immediately close after opening). When I tried Windows Update, it was still giving me an error ("Something went wrong, Try to reopen Settings later"). However, the day was saved when I was able to use the recovery function to revert back to my prior build, just as I was preparing for the grim task of reloading Windows and restoring all of my apps and data. That was the closest call I have had with a DEV version in the past few years. I'll try again when the next build hits.
yup that sounds EXACTLY like my issues - nightmare
I also reverted back to build 21301 - which works fine
and now i have jumped to release preview channel - i just cant take these risks - i have all my work but also school documents - yes most of them sync with the cloud - but i dont want to have to wipe clean my PC just to fix some stupid hiccup

IDK where this issues stems from but seems im not the only one

Press ctrl+alt+delete and select Task manger. You can run some commands there. Start explorer

    ------
Another issue I had on both systems.. If you click on Task View, and then anywhere on the screen beside tasks, desktop image is gone, replaced with a black desktop. Setting desktop background back to image solves this
didnt work am afraid- it would NOT bring any task manager or any way to do anything except stare at a black screen all day long

It's neither. It has been rebranded as Dev as it is not related to any release build but is a development branch build.

When I switched my cable modem to the Comcast cable modem router combo HP Smart turned into HP Stupid. Over WiFi it would not find my HP 4100 Deskjet printer. It did find my Officejet 6830 printer. I had to use a USB cable to get it installed.
Not surprising. I was surprised it worked as well as it did wired! I don't use any wireless equipment today--not as fast, not as secure, not as reliable, imo. Heck, right now I have trouble getting the standard HP Win10 driver package to install--it's some weird thing with the driver installer--not the drivers. But HP Smart installs them fine for my Officejet 5740--wired--of course...

    Thanks for the info, Winuser...

Also, I'm in the Instant Ink HP program as I found it works well & beats the stuffing out of cartridge buying at retail--I spend ~$60 a year and never run out of color or black ink! Includes shipping and taxes, etc. HP polls the printer from the Internet and automatically ships out replacement cartridges when they hit a certain low level--usually receive the new cartridges before current ones are dry. HP Smart works really well with that, too--but wired operation, of course, is all I can speak to. What I like about Instant Ink is that you're measured by the page--and an entire page of color equals the same as a page of b&w text. The wife uses color frequently, and loves the program.

@waltc I thought about using Instant Ink except I don't use the HP printers much. I use the Officejet mostly for the scanner and when I have a need for a color printout. I use my Brother laser printer for most of my printing. My son will be the using the Deskjet more once he starts his Community College classes. He's going to try getting a better job. He works in retail and even though his store is doing OK the company in whole isn't.
