At this point is there any real advantage to participating in the insider program? When I got back home today and logged in it looked like a completely new build vs and update. I was worried that it wiped stuff clean but things seem to be ok.

Going back to Insider branch... :)
One nit I'll pick: I wish they would modify (correct?) the "Downloading" notation to "Waiting for download" and use the Downloading notation for only the update currently being downloaded.

It's really only an advantage to Microsoft. They want people testing these new builds and freely admit that there may be bugs. I opted out.

Yea, I opted out of the Insider Program about a week before official release.

Once you opt out I guess you only get public releases? Right now I am running Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview, installed yesterday. If I opt out now will this eventually revert to the public version or should I wait?

I'm not sure. My current build is 10240 the "official" release.

However, from what I read if you opt out before the first year after release is up, you can still take advantage of the free upgrade.

This is correct. You have one year from July 29, 2015 to upgrade unless you are on Xp or Vista etc.. But I believe there is sort of a discount for those.

I installed the early beta versions on a new machine that I build so there wasn't an upgrade there. I am hoping that I never have to officially pay for it.
