Go to these settings your looking at the wrong ones.
Settings / update and security/ windows update/ advanced options at the bottom of the page then fastring
when I go to that page, the settings you are asking about are greyed out now, but look like fast ring was enabled; I know it was, cause I was on it

After you do the free upgrade, and Windows 10 activates. A hardware ID is stored on the Microsoft activation server for that PC. Then when you do a clean install latter on, it looks for that hardware ID. If it finds it, your activated, if it doesn't, your not activated. That's how their doing it now. Looks like that's carried over to the Insider preview program. Clean installs of the Insider preview now follow the same rules as installing the Consumer version.
Trouble is that Microsoft have never stated how many, if any, hardware changes you are allowed.

ie If I update my graphics card will that be enough to make me buy a retail copy of Windows 10 or will it be a major component like the motherboard.

Trouble is that Microsoft has repeatedly and clearly stated what a "hardware setup", a computer is regarding the OEM licensing terms, but the users do not bother to search for this information. There's no reason to believe that this same principle would not apply to for instance a Windows Insider license, too.:

    Q. Can a PC with an OEM Windows operating system have its motherboard upgraded and keep the same license? What if it was replaced because it was defective?

    A. Generally, an end user can upgrade or replace all of the hardware components on a computer—except the motherboard—and still retain the license for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created. Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred to the new computer, and the license of new operating system software is required. If the motherboard is replaced because it is defective, you do not need to acquire a new operating system license for the PC as long as the replacement motherboard is the same make/model or the same manufacturer's replacement/equivalent, as defined by the manufacturer's warranty.

The reason for this licensing rule primarily relates to the Microsoft Software License Terms and the support of the software covered by those terms. The Microsoft Software License Terms are a set of usage rights granted to the end user by the PC manufacturer, and relate only to rights for that software as installed on that particular PC. The system builder is required to support the software on the original PC. Understanding that end users, over time, upgrade their PCs with different components, Microsoft needed to have one base component "left standing" that would still define the original PC. Since the motherboard contains the CPU and is the "heart and soul" of the PC, when the motherboard is replaced (for reasons other than defect) a new PC is essentially created. The original system builder did not manufacture this new PC, and therefore cannot be expected to support it.

A motherboard swap will trigger it for sure. I've done numerous Video card upgrades and never had an activation prompt or issue on Windows 8.1, 7 etc. Hard drive swaps too. Even if you get an activation message, you just call Microsoft and tell them what you upgraded. Do the phone activation.

Never understood people turning restore off either. It is so good at getting you back to a good state for those 'what the hell happened there' episodes.
Restore doesn't always work. I've had it fail on me a few times. I prefer file backups and system images.
