You can change the folder view settings in Windows to what you want. Folder view settings include the File Explorer window size, template (not for folders on the Desktop), column width, Group by, Sort by, and layout view of items in your folders.

By default, Windows will only remember the first 5000 folders you apply folder view settings to. After you reach the default 5000 folders limit (BagMRU Size), Windows will no longer remember anymore folder view settings you apply.

Windows stores the folder view settings of the current user in the registry key below for each folder until the limit has been reached.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU

If you find Windows not remembering your folder view settings, you can increase the cache memory size (BagMRU Size) up to a maximum of 20,000 folders to be remembered instead of the default 5,000 folders.

This tutorial will show you how to change or increase the folder view settings cache memory size for your account in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 to have Windows remember your folder view settings.

Would you happen to know where this maximum of 20 000 comes from? I've looked all over the internet and a lot of places claim this as the max value. What would happen if I set this to something higher like 50 000, 100 000 or perhaps even 2 147 483 647? Thanks.

Hello T4D, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Unfortunately, there's not any official documentation from Microsoft on this setting.

However, it's a max size that was discovered of the years from testing.

Yes I hate the fact that there is a MAX. I must be going over that, because my folders set to thumbnail view constantly changes back to list view, and especially when i ask for subfolders to also be pictures. I have really notice this as well, when I first do an install of windows I can start that day and im constantly setting different folders to thumbnails like Pictures, Videos and really almost most of my folders through the computer because I make custom organized folder icons and set a different one for each folder on my machine depending on the type of files it is, at this point with all my custom folders I have 3,568 which i cant even believe it. Been making them for like 6 years now. But still thats not even the main point I want to state about the folder views even when i set to turn automatic folder discovery off and set everything. If I GET to THE folder a different way than the last time i got to it, then that counts as another folders with specific views saved. Like if I open explorer there is instantly atleast 3 maybe 4 ways i can open up my Pictures folder. I can click Pictures, I can click Documents and then Pictures, I could go to my user profile and i have documents as junction there and i can even open D:\Dox which is a drive devoted to my documents folder that is linked from. And every single direction I go to My Pictures, it has to save all those folders and subfolders as thumbnail view cause i set them to that. And the other direction, gotta do it again. And even an Open dialog box from any application, if i go to pictures from there its back to List view and i have to change to thumbnails again. And they all "once i set them" finally stay in that view, except they eventually dont after about a week worth of setting stuff up it starts forgetting each group of folders i set that way and i have to do it over and over and over again. I am very ocd and i cant barely do anything else on muy machine if i find folders not set right and got to go change em over and over. And I even reset view alot and have to do View... Large Icons. over and over again. And even the same goes for My Downloads folder which reverts back to Grouped By Whatever it is, and Details View. And Hate that just as much, I made a stream deck button that automates changing each folder to nit GROUPED and sort by type and list view unless its large icons. And if i get to downloads from another means, its back to group details. And microsoft cant do anything about it, ive tried with customer service a few times every few years to see if they can fix it, they just dont have an answer at all but to reformat and reinstall windows lol. Just because they find it too much work to do their jobs and fix that issue in windows and just tell us to do the reinstall. Just wanted to add my words in there. I dont know how many people actually know this cause I've also always done searches to see if an answer is ever made. Whatever. Id love to switch to mac if i had the money for a mac

PS: If anyone is interested in having my collection of folder icons that I've made for myself, you can use them too. I have them on my website, if its still up, and if not just contact me and i can give you a zip of them. I dont really do work from my website much anymore and probably should give it up but i just love having that server. 290+ Free Custom Folder Icons (Windows 10) | 337 MEDiA STUDiOS (also i see on the link its very old, I have recreated all the icons from that one to a different design since.
