This is one concept that many users up to this day are having difficulty dealing with. When you buy a PC, it is yours but the Windows OS installed on it is not. It is as if you are having a lease. I have heard that phrase so very often" This is my computer and I am the sole administrator, meaning I can do whatever I want". Definitely not true... Lots of things are happening in the background on MS's behalf.

For example, every month MS releases 4 types of updates: A (Office updates), B (PT for security updates), C, and D (optional, non- security updates). I have a subscription for Microsoft 365 and to my knowledge I have never seen the updates when they are being installed, but I know that MS is keeping the application up-to-date. Same thing for the registry and System 32, you don't go and play around there without knowing what you are doing. One key or file deleted mistakingly and you are in deep trouble...

That means lots of things are happening in the background that we don't know of.

That was a general opinion not addressed to anyone in particular.
This is why (esp. what you wrote in your first paragraph) I have left Windows for Linux, and only boot into it when I have to. PC's are fiddly enough without MS randomly screwing around with and breaking things behind your back. It wouldn't be so bad if they were competent, though bad enough, but they are just so sloppy and all over the place. It astonishes me what people are willing to put up with, seemingly from sheer intertia.

It's one thing to 'lease' software - commercial software has always been 'licensed', not really owned. But the constant, bungling, secretive, and useless updating, upgrading, and experimenting is simply the last straw. The gyrations that people go through just to try to get things to work, never mind actually understanding what the heck happened, are nuts - and I'm not just talking beta testing (Insiders). I've been in this business for nearly 40 years, and I've never seen anything like this.
But this forum is the place to come when you need to get your partner's Windows fixed - she needs it for her research. The only way to get data off of some of her instruments for analysis is with Windows-only software, which is in itself a travesty. Oh well.

I totally respect and appreciate your well written and formulated opinion regarding MS's OS.

While I understand your comments and largely agree with them regarding the instability of recent Windows versions, I personally have NOT found Linux to be the solution. Instead, I have found it suffering from much the same instabilities, and WORSE, than current Windows versions.

I have used Linux distros for over 15 years -- so I am not new to this -- and I used them on a regular basis for most of that time. But last year, I quit using them -- for good! Why?

First, I need my desktop hardware to work, and with current Linux distros that is no longer the case. I can reload my Linux drive from a 2-year old backup and the hardware works; I reload it from last year's backup, and it does not. I downloaded the Linux drivers from the vendor's site -- and they no longer work. So, I have a printer and screen connected to my desktop that I can not use in Linux -- and YES, I have exhausted Linux forums about these issues with no success.

Second, I need the apps I use to work. I grew to like a handful of apps -- but over time, those same apps started disappearing from the repos. No problem, folks say, just rebuild them from source -- but over time, that quit working, as well. Again, no solutions from the Linux forums.

Third, and most aggravating, weekly "crashes". Despite NO hardware or software changes, at least once every week or so, booting into either of my two distros got a command line, not a desktop. And then, I would spend HOURS running commands and making patches to, in many cases, give up and have to restore the distro from the latest Clonezilla backup.

My point in all of this rambling is not to start a fight over Linux-good-or-bad, but instead, to just point out that Linux has its troubles as well -- and in my case, it has troubles I am NOT encountering in Windows.

And finally, every year, in one Linux forum or another, some pundit claims that THIS YEAR will be the the "Year-of-the-Linux-Desktop" -- the year when nearly everyone finally jumps to Linux, leaving Windows behind. Well, I actually DID THAT -- and got so disgusted that I came back -- to Windows. Does Windows have issues? Yes. Do I need to do image backups before applying a Windows Update in case that trashes my PC? Yes, I do -- and that takes all of 10 minutes. But -- and this is the important point -- ALL my equipment and ALL my apps work; same can not be said in Linux.

In regard to the Experimentation issue, I've looked at my registry and find the following:

    KB4592438 CU Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.685 and v20H2 19042.685-experimentation.png

I've gone to the link and read the "instructions" but am not sure that Microsoft has activated Experimentation on my machine.

Can anyone tell me if I need to do anything? At this point my inclination is to leave things alone.

I'm glad somebody has said this.
I started out using Command Line OSs (pre DOS) and moved into Windows at 3.0.
I became a "Windows man" but over the years have experimented with several manifestations of Unix, including Ubuntu, Cinnamon and a few others. I always come back to Windows, which for all its faults, does what I need to do with the maximum number of assistance resources available (like TenForums) and the most versatility.

I keep a Cinnamon build on my old Netbook which is no longer "man enough" for Windows but hardly ever use it.
The best advice I ever had, and it was given on this forum, was to keep an image of your Windows system at all times.

Given that I do that - it's Windows for me all the way.

I've often thought of trying some form of Linux, but just haven't gotten around to it. Besides, Windows does what I need with minimum effort. I'm not a "fan boi" of Windows, but I rarely have problems.
