So, VMware WS 16.1 has been released and I upgraded to it (still have some licensing bones to pick with them) because the article said it could run Shared VMs. Turns out that was "true" but it will only run Shared VMs as ordinary VMs. Nevertheless, by first testing WS 16.1 Player on Fedora Rawhide w/ kernel 5.10.0-0.rc4.20201117git9c87c9f41245.79.vanilla.1.fc34.x86_64
I determined it would install and run with no modifications, by creating a VM from the UUPDUMP image. Anyway the move from Player to Workstation 16.1 went flawlessly. When I rebooted to the latest kernel 5.10.0-0.rc5.82.vanilla.1.fc34.x86_64
Networking disapperared but was soon restored by changing the Network from NAT to Bridged (which was the way Linux networking using VMware mostly worked better in Linux in the past). Now I have resurrected some old VMs from my RAID 0 array and they are mostly working and updating away. I believe I will leave my Windows VMware WS at 15.75/7 because it does have a Workstation Server. I upgraded my new notebook - a Eluktronics Max-17 with 64 GB RAM and a 4 TB NvieMe SDD to Workstation 16 before I found that the WS 16.1 version of Shared VMs was just a sham and VMware has gotten to the point that not only did it "depract" Shared VMs but it "deprecated" the WS 15 license and I can't eaasily see how to retrieve it from the website. Anyway, lots of things going on so I won't miss a new build next week. Happy Thanksgiving to all in the States.
