I reverted to 630 via Macrium image and the update worked on my HP

    Thanks, @secondsight

    though the date is fried
Good you got it sorted. I think (but don't quote me) that the date refers to the last cumulative update/feature update that was installed (not a preview in other words). If you were using an older image and then updated that with a preview the date there does not change.

I may have given a wrong date also early. I think Brink said some time ago that there would be no Cumulative Updates in December so in fact my 661 limbo won't end on the 8th of December but instead on 12th of January.

My Cab installed .661 failed to update to this Optional CU .662, so I've re-imaged to yesterday and will await December's CU.

According to the first post there will be a CU 'B' release on December 8th just no optional 'previews'. Perhaps why this optional preview came in today before the 1st of December

This was in the preface of the first post of this thread:

IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the holidays and the upcoming Western new year, there won’t be a preview release (known as a “C” release) for the month of December 2020. There will be a monthly security release (known as a “B” release) for December 2020. Normal monthly servicing for both B and C releases will resume in January 2021.

A LOT of us have had that same problem. Couldn't get to .662 from .661
IF you have a backup from say... Nov 11th, 12th, 13th etc., that is .630, THAT will take the .662 update... no problem.

Doing an in-place update allowed me to revert to 19042.630 and then apply 19042.662 - Too bad I had deleted my pre-661 Macrium Backups.

It's also possible to do a repair install (upgrade in place) to go back to 630. That is what I did, as I neglected to image the OS pror to installing 661. Laugh, if you like.

Looks like my GF saved my bacon (again), I came back 45 minutes ago and when I checked for updates (it's all manual on my main system), I got update for .NET 3.5 and Optional quality update awaiting.
Run all thru WU (reboot after .NET) and everything installed without a hitch within 20 minutes

Run system checks and all clear.
From impressive fixes list only these 2 apply even remotely to my main system.

Addresses an issue that causes the “I forgot my Pin" functionality on the lock screen to fail. This failure occurs if the user has signed in using a username and password and the DontDisplayLastUserName or HideFastUserSwitching policy settings are enabled.

Addresses an issue that might cause a non-paged pool memory leak in some scenarios.

Disk cleanup detected some 66MB to clean.
    Startup tab still screwed up.

I was offered KB4586453 as an optional download and install through WU.
I was on .630 because I had performed an in place upgrade after having installed .662 by CAB previously.
This was because installing .662 caused my boot up time to really blow out to over 1.30 minutes.
I have made a backup of .630 before installing .662 through WU just now.
Hoping the WU version does not cause me the same problem...

    Nope...No problem so far.
I shut down and booted up.
From the Windows logo to desktop in under 15 seconds:)
On restart from Windows logo to desktop in under 30 seconds.
    Fastboot really helps on shutdown...
