Both the date and the details have changed. Now auto forwarding to another Yahoo mailbox will also be discontinued, not just 3rd party mailboxes.

I am never ceased to be amazed how companies arrive at their decisions to cut services.
Here is a generic service that is standard on most email platforms, free of charge, yet yahoo wishes to charge for it. Why? Greed?
An opinion from a writer at Softpedia.
It's not difficult to figure out why Verizon took this decision. With the popularity of Yahoo Mail obviously declining, some users who just wanted to retain their Yahoo inboxes configured auto-forwarding rules to other accounts, so all emails that arrived on Yahoo Mail were automatically redirected to another email address.
It remains to be seen how many users will make the switch to the subscription services following this unexpected Verizon decision, but for now, I wouldn’t be surprised if another wave of users drop Yahoo Mail and switch to the many alternatives out there.
Yahoo Mail Is Removing an Essential Feature for Free Users
Not really Yahoo now though but Verizon who also have AOL Mail which according to the headers now goes through Yahoo so that will probably get the same treatment.
You should still be able to auto-forward mail to Yahoo, and as I read it auto-forwarding in Yahoo Mail will continue to be allowed if it's set to forward to another Yahoo account. The announcement specifically says it's auto-forwarding to 3rd-party email addresses that's being turned off.
I suspect Yahoo want to stop you auto-forwarding mail to another 3rd-party provider so you can read your Yahoo mail without seeing the ads in the Yahoo Mail webmail page. It's presumably the ads that make the free Yahoo Mail viable.
I have been using a German Webmail System for some years , as a backup to my main accounts - GMX.com. This has proved very reliable and they have an auto Mail collector that may allow you to circumvent the Yahoo changes, rather than have Yahoo forward the mail you get GMX to collect it for you ... Gmail also has this feature if you use google products
Well I hope other services do not follow.
I use the forwarding when I move someone to another service. I can still move them but with two inboxes to check just makes it a little more cumbersome.
Next they will drop the auto responder / vacation response.
Everyone is after subscription dollars and as Bree pointed out ad revenue.
If the product is free, you are the product. !!!
That, looks like a lie! Busted, for saying that it's for security reason(s).We regularly evaluate our products and services against current security standards and have decided to remove this feature to help ensure free Yahoo Mail accounts remain secure.
