the update showed up and was automatically queued, so I went into the catalog and downloaded it. Once I downloaded it and looked for updates, it cancelled the queued update.

If you uninstall the most recent KB4580325 security update for Flash Player then check for updates, Windows Update will reinstall it.

So I tried it today to see what would happen. You cannot make this stuff up....

Actually the true story is told by 'Installed updates' in Control Panel. Although Windows Update had found the Security update for Flash Player, and went through the motions of installing it, with the Update for the removal of Flash Player already installed it was a nul event - nothing was actually installed.

It appears that the 'removal' update trumps the security update and the apparently 'successful' update recorded in the Update History was actually recording that Windows Update had looked at it and decided it was not necessary after all.

As I have found on other machines, installing KB4577586 doesn't actually remove previously installed Flash updates, but it does prevent them reinstalling after you manually uninstall them through Control Panel.

Well presumably it disables Flash and any previously installed Flash updates are inactive. If seeing them listed bothers you, uninstall them through Control Panel - they'll never reinstall once KB4577586 is installed.

For all my other machines I've uninstalled them after KB4577586 was installed. On this machine I thought I'd see how WU would cope if I uninstalled the Flash update before installing KB4577586. The results were amusing...

Just to add to Bree's valid comment:
It's not only seeing them, but they also occupy some disk space, which Storage Sense (Temporary files deletion) doesn't clean until you delete all previous to this one Flash updates.

Unhid the update again and did a manual search, it was then finally discovered and installed fine. RIP Flash (I hope).
