Microsoft says that Windows 10 and Windows Server users will be blocked from installing incorrectly formatted third-party drivers after deploying this month's cumulative updates.

"When installing a third-party driver, you might receive the error, 'Windows can’t verify the publisher of this driver software'," Microsoft says.

"You might also see the error, 'No signature was present in the subject' when attempting to view the signature properties using Windows Explorer.

On windows firms have to submit drivers for ms to test and then are certified you can get around it but is a high risk

Trusted source, not a risk for me. Been beta testing them four years. They aren't the best at telling Mother Microsoft what they are doing in the early stages.

Guess I'll have to block all MS updates for the next 5 months.

Hang in there. I'm betting someone will come along with a way to bypass this. I understand what they are trying to do but it should be the users choice, not an edict from Microsoft.

usually OEMs who submit drivers to MS have to pay Microsoft for the certification

the October 2020 updates for Windows 8.1 (KB4580347 and KB4580358) also block certain 3rd party drivers as mentioned in the "Known Issues" section for these updates

so this problem does occur not only on Windows 10 but Windows 8.1 as well with their recent updates

WHQL certification? I'm fairly certain they removed that fee a while ago.
