    I mean I know that Triumph Bonneville will leak oil and Norton blow a head gasket every now and than but those things are part of what makes them special.
    That's my mindset for everything including computers and yes even windows To me, things that just work are boring.
    The Bonny had another problem as I discovered - I dropped a florin out of my pocket when getting out some money while astride. It found that the carb inlet was big enough that it got sucked in!
    Luckily the inlet narrowed down enough that it couldn't get any further! Was that the users fault?
    I had many bikes over the years but by the time I became an instructor I had given up on British as Japanese was more comfortable and reliable!

    My early '60s Bonny was my first "Real" motorcycle. Got it new, literary in a crate, some assembly required. It's was one of few hundred bought for police at that time but proved deadly for cops so they sold them off and bought BMWs which were more sedate. It was fun with them, warts and all. Japanese didn't have anything like that at that time but they caught up soon enough. Now I have a Yamaha 250ccm, good enough for an old timer like me.

    use DISM to install it
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...d-line-options

    or DISM++
    Dism++ | New Windows Utility

    my virtual machine was stuck on 19041.269 and i fixed it with the cabinet lol.
    Thank you for your reply.

    I clearly did not emphasis my ability as a novice in strong enough terms.

    I'll have to give your advice a miss as the DISM instructions are beyond me!

    I'm coming to conclusion however that I may be better off leaving my machine with its current version: 2004 (OS Build 19041.329), as I'm not interested in any new features - for me it was just fine from new out of the box with 1709 (OS Build 16299.248)

    If however there are better security features with the latest Build version, then perhaps that could be explained to me?

    Obviously I could not just walk away from this without delving deeper, so I searched on how to install Updates from a CAB file. Brink's explanation seemed to make sense to me, so I gave it a go.

    Sadly for me, the update to 423 still fails - that's if I've understood and performed it correctly?:

    Why did I get another kb4566782 update request today, though it was already installed on 12.8.?

    Your system date is wrong, or you have a damaged root authority, run this in cmd prompt

    certutil.exe -generateSSTFromWU roots.sst

    then in powershell

    $sstStore = ( Get-ChildItem -Path C:\ps\rootsupd\roots.sst )
    $sstStore | Import-Certificate -CertStoreLocation Cert:\LocalMachine\Root

    You can also use the STL in https://aka.ms/CTLDownload and certutil -addstore -f root authroot.stl

    Could never afford a Harley but believe it or not I had boss that was called Harley Davidson !
    I'm kinda getting lost with all those builds but for life of me I can't find anything different in 10H2 comparing to 2004. Maybe it's just a place holder.

    Harley Davidson will probably be gone when the baby boomers have all departed this life.

    I let the update have its head again today and it still failed on this PC. But not on the old one!

    fails on Win Home with Intel chipset, SSD drive, LAN socket. - name ACER2020.

    succeeds on Win Pro with AMD chipset and HDD drive, Wifi connection to 5GHz - name LENOVO2019

    I wonder if that is a clue?

    Tony
    My update attempt today after days of occasional attempts to install it resulted in:-

    ACER2020 is now successfully upgraded to Pro using the Settings/Upgrade process - the KB install gets to 99% now, but still ends up with the "get stuffed" message before it undoes all the changes! Weird!
