Sorry that this must sound tedious for experienced users, but we novices are advised to come here for answers.

With that in mind, could someone explain what is meant by a Preview Update? Will there also be a final / firm release of this update available later that installs over the Preview Update?

I'm currently on 2004 (OS Build 19041.329), with 2004 KB4565503 (OS Build 19041.388) stuck in an update loop. Yesterday I manage to install 2020-07 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64 (KB4562899), but when I tried to install KB4568831 (OS Build 19041.423), it also became stuck in a loop on my P.C.

Not tedious at all. MS issues a preview of the CU that will be released to the general public next Patch Tuesday (2nd Tuesday of the month). It is normally released as an optional update in the 3rd or 4th week of the month although due to the pandemic they haven't done so for the last few months.

Not sure what your problem is but the first steps should be to run the update troubleshooter. You can find this in Settings->Update & Security->Troubleshoot->Additional Troubleshooters. You may also want to run Brink's Reset Windows Update script Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

Windows Update won't automatically install this cumulative update preview if you check for updates , but it will automatically install the .NET framework update preview for some reason.

@Ztruker this has nothing to do with the new update. There exist a bug that the first time you install office 2007 the microsoft office validation fails and after 5 retries for 24 hours you cant download any update with an error message. After 24 hours the updates can installed again.

I don't think that was happening, I/O and cpu load was idle and I did wait about 5-10min (nothing seemed to be happening in background).
I didn't check what processes were running, I probably should of but never saw this happen before.
I find it, because i saw in my task manager that the windows update take away 20% form my pc. So i waited 15-20 min and then it asked for restart.

    Hi folks
I can't understand all this "Ms hosed up my machine" stuff that sometimes appears on these boards.

These are basically "Test type" releases - and so there are likely to be defects in them -- if people are imbecellic enough to use these as "production type" machines then IMO they need their brains tested (assuming they have any in the first place). If you are lucky enough to have a stable machine with these releases good -- but I still wouldn't use it as an "everyday" machine unless you are retired, have spare machine or just a glutton for punishment and not reliant on using the PC for work.

The savest way IMO to install any of these releases is either install first as a Virtual machine --failing that backup i.e image your current system first --there's enough free products around --Macrium is good enough for this purpose and is used and liked by loads on these forums.

Now download and create the appropriare release and iso from the UUPDUMP site --this usually works out easier than waiting for Ms's WU to show a release on some systems and run the setup.exe from the created iso.

An advantage of this method is that you don't have to sign up to any "Insider" rings so you can test as many different releases as you want.

Disadvantage of course is that if there is a problem with WU then you won't be testing it !!!

"You pays your money and takes your choice"

If the update etc doesn't work as expected or hoses up a system simply restore your previous version.

Discussing errors / defects found is good --that's what these things should be about - especially if people have ways to fix them --but for unsolvable problems --either restore or wait till a fix or another release is available --no point going on about "non bootable machines" etc if you've no backup. !!!!

    Cheers

Yeah, I probably didn't wait long enough but the second time it did update properly with a counter showing the progress of the update, so must be a bug that the progress gets not shown.

I agree we might be testers with this preview, but on the other side it can not be worse as the current version
