Had to install the CAB package using DISM as KB4568831 didn't show up in Windows Update. Upon installation, I could see the update in "View installed updates" under Programs and Features in Control Panel, but not in Update History in Settings, Update & Security. So I blogged about it: CAB Add-Package Absent from Settings Update History.
    Cheers!

    Ed,

I Read your blog. Only thing I can say is it's always been that way. For an entry to appear under Windows Update History, it must be installed via Windows Update. They go hand-in-hand. DISM installs are outside the loop of Windows Update History.

Sort of like .msi installers will log an entry into Reliability History, while .exe will not.

    Cheers!

Also still no fix or even an acknowledgment of the Optimize Drives bug.

The same thing happened to me. Strange!
What I did learn when I updated the next PC was to just accept the optional update and then let it sit because it is doing it's thing. Eventually you get the restart notice on the windowz update page.

Dear Mr. Gates, Please don't make any more changes to the way Windowz werks. Every time you do you bugger up other stuff that was working fine, like the drive optimization thing that has been totally busted for a while now. Maybe it's all due to COVID-19. Sure hope that vaccine shows up soon, I can't take this anymore. If I wasn't so old and set in my ways I would try to learn how to use some flavor of Linux.

I'm that way also but can use Linux Mint much like Windows, don't need a lot of the Terminal [Command Prompt] features but usually can find what I need on the 'net. One could start by downloading an .iso file used to create the Linux LiveDVD, boot it and see what's what. It won't affect Windows at all and the programs included work.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the LiveDVD usually has a feature in it for Installing if desired or the USB Image Writer used to create the bootable thumb drive. Only caveat is to have the .iso file itself available for the Image Writer to use as the Source. If wanting to store downloads/files I use a 16GB drive but 8GB works fine.

Most downloadable .iso files are less than 4GB, some under 2GB.

I installed this "optional update" and when I rebooted, I had no desktop, no taskbar, nothing. It just sat there and never loaded. I hit the reset button and then it "finished up" a few percent going from like 83 to 100. After that, everything was normal again.

Learning delays the aging process mate, keep your brain alive.

Get Kubuntu 20.04 ISO and the latest Rufus app to create a bootable stick (GPT).

You'll be asked to resize the Windows main partition (pink) = move the slider to 80GB (blue). Follow the procedure, keep the clock default. That takes less than 5 minutes here.

Then take a tour of system settings. That's it!

Get updates via the Discover app in the search menu that looks like Windows (bottom left). Set Firefox browser the way you like.

If you don't like it, ask us how to remove it in a new thread. You'll boot in the Grub menu, you have 10 seconds to choose Windows.

    Take care,

Note: Default optimize drive works, what you see is a false reading. Once it has run, it is displayed in Task Scheduler every 7 days.

    all ok, including VM's

thought it was kinda sneaky how it was hidden down under Optional Updates (where drivers you don't need are hiding...). Usually it right up front saying it is Optional.

Betcha more than 1 user has no idea it's even there.

Probably deliberate so that only the more savvy will get it. Nah not really.
