Windows 9 is most likely the hottest project currently prepared by Microsoft at this point and even though the company says absolutely nothing about it, we still have quite a lot of details about the operating system that's expected to revamp Redmond's modern platform.

Now a new report published by The Verge and citing unnamed sources that preferred to remain anonymous for obvious reasons is revealing that Microsoft is planning to launch a Windows 9 preview version sometime this year, thus trying to give users the chance to try out the upcoming operating system before the public launch.

If MS actually does release a consumer preview sometime this year, I will definitely give it a try.

How would one get a consumer preview?

You'd just download it right from Microsoft. It was free to everyone with Windows 8.0. They didn't limit it to just certain people.

Maybe "consumer preview" isn't exactly the right word for it, but what I'm talking about is the free trial, like MS had for both Windows 7 and 8, which I downloaded from their site. Hope this clears things up.

The consumer preview is a free trial? It may not be the final version but its trial software. It will eventually time bomb and stop working. The only official trial I know of for Windows 8 is the 90 day enterprise trial. 8 Core and 8 Pro will not install without entering a product code. Not without modifying the install media.

With Vista and 7 the preview versions had a preset date that one could continue to use the software without any issues which was usually until after the RTM however after that date Windows would start shutting down after a preset period of time. I had the preview or release candidates for Vista, 7, and 8 so I'll probably install the one for 9 or whatever they decide to call it. The 90 day trials are for the final paid version or RTM.
