3 reasons to consider getting a new computer

Thank you, I like AMD, I just bought a new laptop in 2016, and you are not making me buy Intel. If I ever buy a new PC, it's because this one no longer works for what I want. The same exact reason my old W7 lappy was replaced.

No thank you, no Intel, and no MS, my past laptop was an AMD build too...

Those AMD Ryzens are quite fine and properly-priced. I am still using my 1000€ i7 5960-x, but my next desktop will probably be AMD. Intel is plagued with so many vulnerabilities these days.

BTW: Thread's title is quite misleading: It should read: "Three reasons why you must have got an Intel computer".

for most people one doesn't need the greatest and newest computer.

The only reason I got a new laptop is that it's capable of outputting 4K UHD video and with the USB C connector I can connect a few screens !!. Other than that - provided RAM is OK the best thing you can do to revive flagging performance in old equipment is to fit it with at least 1 SSD -- in fact on older laptops the performance improvement will probably be far more noticeable than on more modern gear.

Another reason for doing an upgrade is if you use a load of USB stuff -- especially external SSD's and HDD's then USB 2 is dreadfully slow so go for USB3 ports at least

For Network stuff : Old gear usually have LAN ports so use LAN into a wifi extender if you want to get decent internet performance and you don't want to cable all the way to router.

So IMO using a wifi extender via LAN is the best way to handle these. Short piece of LAN cable to a port on Wifi extender.

Even better if you have several old devices is to use a 4 or 5 port unmanaged switch so you only then need 1 bit of short LAN cable from relevant computer(s) to the switch and another short piece ofcable from the switch to the wifi extender- set the lan adapter(s) to use full duplex as well for faster throughput and set the wifi extender to use both 2.4 and 5GHZ bands concurrently as well.

Cost of doing this is far cheaper than buying a new laptop / computer unless you have to have one and will extend life of older machines sensibly for a long time yet.

Amazon will probably dispatch a "Hit-Man" to me since I'm urging people not to buy an expensive new laptop unless they really have to.

My cpu/mobo is not too old, but am thinking of a AMD build on new Ryzen.

Got some $$$ tucked away, time for a higher end build (skipping current intel 10 series).

save your money for the moment -- might be worth looking again when the USA 's yearly buying horror spree starts around end of Novemeber -- Black Friday or something like that I think they call it.

Might be some decent offers around then. I'd imagine Amazon etc will "export" this horror bit of consumerism around the planet too !!

I'm more concerned with the OS running properly these days than the hardware it's running on --there's really no hideous hardware around at the moment as far as graphics and processors are concerned.

All I can say though I've had more problems with AMD compatibility than INTEL -- of course others can and probably will differ -- if the thing works and the price differential is significant go for it. AMD graphics is the main problem I've found though - Intel graphics for me work fine as do Nvidia cards.

For HOME users most of these security scares are just things that I.T security admins or 3rd party Anti Virus providers just throw at us -- question of keeping jobs no longer required or marketing products that were OK in C20 but not needed any more -- on HOME machines WD is robust enough -- Scams such as identity fraud, banking scams etc are likely to be more of a problem than some mischievous hacker trying to filch a few dollars from some old mom and pop home computer using some really weird defects in some CPU's which get fixed quick enough anyway.

For networks, commercial servers, web domain servers etc --OK but for home users -- forget about all these weird security holes --just apply the OS security fixes when you get them.
