Introducing an updated, enhanced Skype for Windows 10

Starting in June 2020, Skype for Windows 10 and Skype for Desktop are becoming one so we can provide a consistent experience. This lets us give the newest updates and improvements regardless of where you get Skype, from the Microsoft Store or from skype.com.

A: To keep the consistent experience across the platforms, we've added:

    • Updated close options so you can quit Skype or stop it from starting automatically
    • Improved Tray icon, informing you about new messages and presence status
    • Share files directly from your File Explorer
    • 9 videos in a video call
    • Background Replacement
    • Moderated Chats
    • Meet Now Improvements
    • Improved Call Controls

Q: What’s not supported in this version?

A: We tried to preserve all the functionality of existing Skype for Windows 10 experience, but there are a couple of things that are not yet supported on this platform:

    • Integration with the Share Charm
    • Synchronization with your Outlook contacts

Skype for Android, iPhone, and iPad

    • Background redacted: Didn't have time to tidy up before your video call? Don't worry, you can now blur your background on Skype for iPhone and iPad. Learn how to customize your background on Skype.
    • Always on the go: Skype now works with Android Auto, so you can hear your Skype messages and reply hands-free.
    • Bug fixes and stability improvements. We sent some bugs packing and swept up after ourselves.

    What’s fixed?

    • Notification fixes on Android
    • Skype Meet Now - User cannot join the conversation.

The new features are rolling out gradually over the next couple of days so if you don’t see them right away, just check again soon!

Please let us know what you think about the latest changes, either here in the community or through the Skype app. And you can always go to Skype’s User Voice to submit and vote for new features and ideas. You might also want to check out the known issues.

A shock to suddenly find it different when I had need to reinstall Skype due to an unrelated problem!

Infuriating that it cannot be minimised etc using the standard 3 buttons top right!

    Hi there

    @Snugglebugs

I get the feeling that the left Hand of Ms doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Why bother with Skype at all when the Ms Teams application works for what most people have previously used skype for : "Zoom" type chats with friends etc.

Ms Teams IMO is a much better app these days -- vastly improved from its original "Hind Leg of Donkey" implementation.

Free version is great - on install choose business -- give any old name doesn't matter - otherwise install points to skype (thanks for that info @cereberus) !!

    Cheers

I have used Zoom and found initially that it was more reliable than Skype. I used it because my professional forum switched to it for virtual meetings and we managed to get it to work rather better than Skype and Teams. Not so sure after the last few days though! If I don't get a better experience next time I use Zoom, I can certainly try Teams.
