CV19 lockdown is so boring. I don't want stability - I want to live dangerously.

If you want stable use RP Ring.

Insider Programme was about Development not poxy obscure bug fixing.

    Hi there

up to a point - but if Networking gets hosed up (as it has been on some of these releases) then I would consider that a major defect that is hardly a "poxy defect" and needs fixing asap as it's part of the base OS (or should be).

Remember these releases eventually will go out to RP so major defects in these should be fixed of course. I don't think most people object to the risks attendant to using these releases -- but I would still expect (as I'm sure most people as well) the basic functionality of Windows (which includes networking) to work properly.

For a lot of home users some of this security IMO is way way over the top -- typical home networks just want to simply be able to logon and access shared files / services be they from other Windows machines, Apple hardware or Linux type NAS servers -- applying CIA or NSA type security and encryption to these types of networks is just plain bonkers and just hoses up the whole thing.

OK If running corporate / smaller work type LANS, Forums, hosting domains etc etc -different ball game -- but if "Little Johnny" comes to your house and wants to play music / multi-media on his windows laptop from your servers it shouldn't be a struggle to get this to work !!!!

Just curious. Is anybody else have problems with their webcams on this build? Mine says the driver is 5/22/2020 - perhaps that's the reason I can't get video on the camera but the microphone works fine. Or could it possibly be the Radeon drivers?

Debating whether or not to uninstall Hyper-V and maybe Downlgrade VMware 20H2 to 15.5.5 and save me a hundred bucks.

    Hi there

    @martyfelker

depends on what you actually need either vmware wks or hyper-V for.

If you can get QEMU/KVM working then you don't really need hyper-V at all unless you want to test it -- the KVM HYPERVISOR has all the hardware pass thru stuff you are likely to need AND you can concurrently run VM's both on KVM AND VMWare workstation / player.

If you already have VMWare wks then there's no need to upgrade if you don't want to run HYPER-V VM's concurrently -- IMO HYPER-V is only of value if you want to run Windows VM's from a Windows host -- and its still fiddly to get good hardware passthru to optimise the VM.

KVM VM's also allow booting from real external hardware such as USB sticks without having to create an iso first, you can (install package OVMF) also have UEFI VM's on non UEFI machines and theres a zillion things one can do to make the VM's really efficient. You can also boot a VM from a "Native" i.e RAW SSD/HDD which I think isn't possible either with VMWare or Hyper-V --could be wrong about Hyper-V but I don't think so.

Another advantage -- dynamically (i.e hot plug) external USB drives automatically are attached to the VM -- I haven't tried when 2 VM's are running as you can't attach the same device to both VM's --however bringing yp 2nd VM after ist one has "grabbed the device" you can share as network drive as normal . !!!

The only hardware problem I've had with QEMU is that it doesn't like (working on it at the moment -- probably some special driver needed) an external SSD attached to a machine via a USB3-->SATA adapter whereas VMWare VM's don't have a problem with it.

Anyway here's an image of 2 W10 VM's running concurrently on one of my Arch Linux systems (KDE Plasma / SDDM) is the GUI for managing the VM's .

I'm using the VMWare Wks for Linux for the VMWare Virtual Machine (the same serial number for VMWare works for Linux Host as Windows Host) and KVM managed by the Virtual Machine manager (install the packages : sudo pacman -S virt-manager kvm qemu vde2 ebtables dnsmasq bridge-utils openbsd-netcat) for the QEMU/KVM Virtual machine.

Webcams working 100% on this build -- I've got 2 so one for each VM -- no probs - just pass thru the hardware / attach to the VM.

Both mine are USB connected -- haven't got a machine to test "internal webcams" such as on a laptop --need a spare laptop for that !!!.

I'm working on getting a version of Linux I can confgure with VMM (QEMU/KVM). I wanted to install Debian Unstable but it was having a problem with a usb port which I "believe" was deleted in Windows. It was an external hard drive which malfunctioned - I have bought a replacement. The backup drive is more important to than the webcam. But, since I getting my first haircut in six months tomorrow I might look better - I'm also cutting off my beard. I'm going to try again with Ubuntu 20.10 today's build. As for Hyper-V a very quick check on DuckDuckGo for information on performance issues when the Windows 10 host is virtualized through installing Hyper-V didn't yield any information. Looks like Hyper-V is best reserved for Windows Server. It's possible I'll install that but I want to get backups of these operating systems working. Anyway, thanks as always for your extremely helpful feedback on both Linux and Windows. Who knows - maybe I'll try Zen Installer again.

    Cheers,

Debian didn't work out but I'm about to install Ubuntu 20.10 which already looks good. This will enable me to rapidly test the just released Linux kernel 5.7 final with both VMware WS 15.5.5 and VMM. I would like to alert folks that, since I can see some of the services shutting down whenWindows restarts, that Redmond has pushed the Update Orchestrator service to my machine. So I think an update will be pushed fairly soon. I'll install Ubuntu and go to sleep. Tomorrow I get my first haircut this year - but my wife has taken a picture - I haven't had this long hair (not much of it) or beard since the '70's.
