Variable refresh rate not working as expected on devices with Intel iGPU
Intel and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues when using a monitor with Variable refresh rate (VRR) plugged into an Intel integrated graphics processing unit (iGPU) display adapter and Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). Enabling VRR on affected devices will not enable the VRR for games using Direct X 9.

To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on Windows 10 devices with affected drivers or firmware from being offered Windows 10, version 2004.

Affected platforms:

Client: Windows 10, version 2004

Next steps: Microsoft and Intel are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Investigating

Because I had used WU then the ISO on top of it, I compounded the error, I think. I tried re-doing with ISO and it got worse. MCT froze, Update assistant froze, My Check for Updates looks like this now.

Welcome to the club!. My gut feelings tell me that for some reason this Upgrade was not even ready for release. It would have been pure and inconceivable nincompoopery for MS to push the release date a bit later to June or beginning of July. In a way, they didn't have a choice.

I think that MS is trying too many things (features) at the same time and the OEMs and IT professionals are having difficulty keeping up with the pace. At one point, want it or not, MS will have to slow down.

I have Intel HD 630 graphics, and have no problems whatever with 2004 (my RP ring install). Still, I am not offered 2004.

Add that there should have been a switch in the update noting if the iGPU was enabled, which like you, mine isn't. Switch could have been something like Enabled = block, Disabled = allow install.

On the IGPU, do you have driver installed for it?
For me I never installed it and it doesn't show up in Device manager so in that case how would MS know about IGPU, I doubt they check CPU feature as a base, I am betting they go off device manager.

Hmm, I forget if I have IGPU disabled in bios or left to the auto setting (on).

I wonder how does MS keep track of all the different machines with all the different reasons to place a block ?
