I understand - and I also have had assembled my previous PC myself and had to buy an OS - Windows XP Pro - at some stage.
But trust me: these days it's all about channel sales - via OEMs and corporates - and you're just an exception here...

Well like i said, my main reason why i got a license for W10 was for gaming.
Had no choice since games weren't supporting W7 anymore. I just had to let the old pirated W7 go. I will miss it honestly just as i miss good old Win XP.
A shame though that basically only 1 OS is standard for today's gaming. W7 and even W8.1 have become obsolete unfortunetly when it comes to gaming. There are indeed older games that support the older OS. But it's really idiotic to say the least that a game that comes out now even if it doesn't use DX12 it still won't support W7 or W8.1.
Most pirates don't care about that stuff, windows are disposable part.Pirated and doctored W7 updated to W10 are activated easily but no serious user will use them like that, too much risk involved if nothing else. For me OS is just as much part of a computer as OS is. If I have to pay for hardware 1000+ bucks OS is barely 1/5 of price although practically speaking it's half of the PC as one can't work without another. Actually, Windows 10 retail version is best investment for a computer, you can transfer it to new HW over and over while paying arm and a leg for HW.Yeah until you get the famous "your copy windows of windows is not genuine" message.Or end up with some version from torrents that's filled with bugs and other crap.
No matter what in the end you have to buy it. They made W10 in such a way that the consumer really has no option if they want a good OS. Hell i bought it just for gaming because games are starting to drop support for W7 and i'm satisfied overall with W10.
The only good thing people have is that there are numerous other websites where you can get a W10 license much cheaper instead of paying 200-300 euros for it retail.
If they actually do remove the "forced updates" feature in the next OS it will probably sell like crazy. It's up to MS though if they choose to make to consumer happy or if they might actually dig their own grave by not removing it in the next OS the make.
I haven't got the notification at home for this update yet but all 5 machines here at work showed the update available this past Friday. When I checked each one of them they all said they were preparing to do the update at 1:50am the following morning or something like that so I left them alone thinking they would update.
Came in this morning expecting to find that they all had updated but none of them did. They all still have the notification in the task bar and when I pull it up it still says, "update scheduled for 1:50am tomorrow morning".
Why didn't they update and how can I just tell them to go ahead and perform any updates when we aren't at work? All of their active use times have been set. I did this several weeks ago because I thought that might block any updates from automatically happening.
19041 is not being offered to me via WU so, did a MR image 18363.836 and restored it to a spare SSD. DL iso from MS, mounted it to the newly restored 18363 and did setup. About 45 minutes later it was finished. I used this method in the event that 19041 would not cooperate, I still had the original 18363 ready and waiting. So far, everything looks ok.
The way I see it is if the Upgrade is not offered to you, you are better off waiting until MS says that your machine is ready to receive it. Personally, I upgraded my production machine the day the Upgrade became official release. Unfortunately, I had to roll back because of too may issues. Right now, I am not in a hurry to get it. My machine is running so fine and smooth on 1909:

I agree with waiting if there are problems. 2 desktops I upgraded are OK except for the inconveniences we all know about. A laptop that wasn't offered the upgrade via WU had problems with a missing driver for something I was never able to pin down, so I reinstated 1909 with MR and will wait until WU finally offers to do its job.
I figured it out. All of them were still running something at the time the update was supposed to happen. Well not exactly running something, everyone just left their applications open which most everybody except me does at the end of every day. The reason mine was still up is that I left early Friday afternoon and I usually leave everything open in case someone needs to use my computer.
The only way to know if there are problems is to upgrade. That's what I did with both of my machines using Upgrade Assistant. The irony is the older machine (second one in my Specs) seems to be working fine while for the main production machine HP Envy (much younger and bought in 2015) I had to roll back because of too many issues. I cannot even explain why.
Now, I am going to wait until MS offers me the upgrade via Windows Update. Even then, I might wait another month or two after the offer.
Example of your "cannot explain why". My box has an Intel HD630 iGPU on the board, though I never use it, I use the 1080Ti. But, because it;s there, MS has me on a block.
Variable refresh rate not working as expected on devices with Intel iGPU
Intel and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues when using a monitor with Variable refresh rate (VRR) plugged into an Intel integrated graphics processing unit (iGPU) display adapter and Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). Enabling VRR on affected devices will not enable the VRR for games using Direct X 9.

Because I had used WU then the ISO on top of it, I compounded the error, I think. I tried re-doing with ISO and it got worse. MCT froze, Update assistant froze, My Check for Updates looks like this now.
