My head really hurts after reading all the posts from 24 hours ago. In my case, after upgrading both of my machines to 2004, I had to roll back my production machine to 1909 because of too many bugs — my non-production machine is left on 2004 for testing purposes.

The biggest issue that caused me to rollback was with my 2 Western Digital external drives not being able to open. Surely, they were password-protected at the time I first installed them. All I have to do usually is to double-click the "unlocker" icon in File Explorer or the shortcut on Desktop and then enter my password on the window that opens. In 2004, when I did that yesterday, I got a weird message to the effect that it could not open it. (I have lost the screenshot because of the rollback)

Another issue had to do with my MR backup software which was not working and had changed from paid Home Edition to Free Edition. I really don't know why. I couldn't do a backup.

Lastly, Disk Cleanup was not working either. MS probably put an end to it as was expected for some time. And I am pretty sure, had I stayed a little longer using my machine on 2004, I would have found other issues.

After rolling back, I have clicked on "Pause Updates" at least four or five times to have my peace of mind. That will give me enough time to figure out what I am going to do next, mostly with regard to my external drives where I have lots of important data. Now on 1909, everything is back to normal.

How does it change from paid to free? That's makes no sense. Are you sure the software is registered?

I have two paid versions of MR for my two machines. As far as I know, I paid again in March 2017 (not really sure about the month, but I can always check) for an upgrade. I still have my purchase receipt which I had used just yesterday to reinstall it from the active direct download link. This is what I got after installing 2004 (proof in the pudding):

I'm not asking you to prove anything to me. I'm just wondering if you registered / re-registered it?

I am not going to run MR Free Edition when I have paid for it. When one first installs MR, there is always a prompt in the process asking either to enter your product key or stay on a 30-day trial. This is the second time that this had happened to me, i.e., the Edition change. I don't really know the root cause of it, but as you can see there was probably a bug for the last iteration. Second after every update, I always make sure to go to "Help > About" to make sure registration is OK , like I just did for version 4952 on my second machine.

It is because your old definition had password=Y and the free edition doesn't support passwords, Edit the definition/options and disable passwords (sorry if someone has already answered this, catching up).

So how come update 2004 isn't showing in WU ?

For me it's only showing 1909 is available to download and install.

I prefer to stick with 1903 for now but shouldn't WU tell me that 2004 is available and ready to download and install instead of 1909 ?
You should install 1909 right now.

1903 support ends December 2020, which means by November (may 2021) you will be forced to update by Microsoft.

If you install 1909 right now while you still got the chance, Microsoft won't force you to update in November (may 2021)

Edit: Microsoft gave another 6 months of support for coronavirus.

You LOSE control if you don't update to 1909 right now. There is a possibility that 2004 will be completely unstable for the next 12 months. And because support for 1903 ends in May 2021, they will force 2004 on you in April 2021 EVEN IF 2004 is extremely unstable.
