You said on another thread that windows update offers you 1909. Take it, support for that ends May 11, 2021. It's a minor update that installs like a CU and turns on features that are already in your 1903, but dormant.

KB4517245 Feature Update via Windows 10 v1909 Enablement Package
I know Bree but i think i'd rather wait for a stable 2004. BTW how long does 2004 to install ? Is it a really big update ?

Right now 1903 is really good and i'm very happy with.

Also didn't 1909 have some issues with windows explorer if i remember right ? Were those ever solved ?

Also i'm guessing that 2004 will be available through WU by the end of 2020 right ?

My experience yesterday was an exercise in forgetting a lesson learned. When I tried this in the insider ring, I would get bluescreens during the upgrade process. This was due to an old obsolete Safenet HASP driver and service that was on my computer. I had to find their uninstall tool (not easy) to remove all vestiges of it. Even then I had weird problems with the release, so reverted back to a backup (prior to the HASP removal).

So I didn't get a windows update offer for the release (in hindsight apparently because it was blocked because of the known HASP incompatibility). So I used the MCT. Surprise, Bluescreen (at least it recovered old install correctly). I unsuccessfully tried to find the uninstall tool on the web again with no luck. So I tried to uninstall it manually. It got farther before a Bluescreen. I eventually found the uninstaller in my downloads directory, duh.

So tldr; if it doesn't show up in windows update, it might be for a reason. For my case you would think MS would have fixed it or at *least* warn you since they know about the problem.

Anyhow, I don't have the weird issue I had after installing the same version in the RP ring.

MCT will not install if your system is found to not be compatible or has an issue block.
Well it did mine, Microsoft listed as a BLOCK the safenet HASP driver. I updated with MCT and it BSOD during the install because of this.

Interesting. It shouldn't have been allowed to install 2004.

Yes, it's a full feature update installing a new OS. There will be a windows.old folder and take at least an hour, maybe longer (depending on the speed of your machine). Letting Windows Update do the install takes even longer still.

How long does the 2004 upgrade take using Windows Update?

The explorer 'issue' was that in 1909 MS changed how Search works in Explorer. Previously it had done its own form of search, from 1909 on it uses the common Windows Search mechanism. Some didn't like that change, hence a lot of '1909 broke explorer search' posts. It's not broken, but it does function differently.

As I said, you can try 1909 and, if you don't like the new way explorer searches, uninstall the enablement package to go back to 1903. You're going to get it in 2004 anyway, so you'd best get used to it.

It is available right now but so far has only offered to a limited number of machines, those that the Microsoft's 'AI' thinks will have a trouble-free update. Oddly, my machines that were offered it were two of my oldest. My newer ones are yet to see it offered.

As more machines get 2004 Microsoft will learn from their telemetry how well it goes, and expand the number of machines being offered 2004 accordingly.

I've been offered it on a 10yo machine and a 2yo machine both HP laptops so both well known configurations.
