Maybe you should try restoring the volume health.
    What does that mean?

Your comment is over generous to MS considering their appalling software QA

Should I just wait for the 20H2, instead of upgrading to 2004?
Also even when the 20H2 comes out, won't the updating system still will have to go through the 2004 first, bringing all of its issues, before I'm allowed to click&download the 20H2 service pack, so is there even any point to wait?

You will be able to update directly to 20H2 (2009) and it will be a full upgrade. I'm sure that is what happened with 1903/1909.
