Last couple of days, my sound icon has been unresponsive.
I've seen that before on rare occasions in previous versions. A Restart usually fixes it.

hmm the thing is it happened yesterday and then I powered off for the night, and its back today. So I'm not sure it would.

Shutting down then starting up again by default uses Fast Startup, a form of hibernation, so such problems can carry over. A Restart doesn't use Fast Startup, it's a full start from cold.

You can also hold "Shift" key down and click shutdown. This also bypasses Fast Startup.

Have you checked for corrupted system files?

I think there is a free trial. Not sure how long it is.
Malwarebytes Free - Includes 14-day trial of Premium

I ran Malwarebytes Free for over two years. It notified me when the trial was over. It then reverted from Malwarebytes Premium to the Malwarebytes Free which does not have real-time protection.

Last October I received a popup from the tray area regarding a special promotion for Malwarebytes Premium. They were offering it for half regular price. I bought a 2-year subscription for 3 devices.

I read a review of antivirus programs. Malwarebytes when set to registered only got an average score. When it was set to unregistered it received a very high score. That is because Malwarebytes when unregistered had the benefit of WD working along side it.

Maybe you should try restoring the volume health.
